Bienvenidos al noticiero

Hola <<First Name>>,

For northerners, snow is supposed to put us into the Holiday spirit. The inevitable happened last night. It snowed. Today, it is followed by wind gusts, lowered temperatures, and the additional meteorological report of wind chill. I listen to MPR Classical radio, wrap my legs into Grandma’s quilt, and wait. I’m cozy but the Holiday spirit evades me. My phone beeps.

A Facebook photo pops up from Cuernavaca, Mexico, where friend, Vita, is dining outdoors with her family. A large, blow-up figure of Frosty the Snowman bobs behind the table in their selfie. Climate change? No, just another cultural overlap in a global world. We’ve exported Frosty, Rudolph, and Charlie Brown’s Christmas tree, but look what we imported? Click to learn why poinsettias are used at Christmas

In Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico, I experiencied La Acostada and Levantada of Baby Jesus, before ending up in Anguangao for Candelaria and his trip to the temple! There is also a Rosca de Reyes, Three Kings Cake, and a seven-pointed Star Piñata involved. There is a reason we whack those piñatas and it’s not for candy! Click here for Latest Article - and please leave a comment on my website!

Special holidays might bring fond memories that fill us or lonely times left empty by losses. Either way, new information could begin new traditions. Check out some of the meanings behind the scenes!

Felices fiestas,

NOTICIAS
My Spanish-speaking friends have a plethora of choices that keep them “festejando” this season – and most of the year! Mexico's Día de los Santos Inocentes and Spain's Fiesta de Los Enharinados (Flour Ritual) were news to me!
These rituals are Biblically-based.

CULTURA
I’m not sure what my celebration will look like this year, but I’m hoping for something simple and meaningful to me. I’ll make Mom’s oyster stew. I’ll light candles. I’d like to participate in a Posada, but it is very cold to go door to door looking for a place in the Inn. (click to learn more)
