April: Bereaved Spouses Awareness Month

Dinners with Love hopes to lighten the load of those who are passing and those who are close to them. We are here to support caregivers as much as we are here to support hospice patients.

While every hospice patient and their family are surrounded by a caring team of nurses and volunteers, the role of the caregiver can be stressful. The caregiver wonders, "What can I do to make my loved one more comfortable?" A concern that often comes at the expense of the caregiver's own well being.

April is Worldwide Bereaved Spouses Awareness month. Though not all caregivers are spouses and not all spouses are caregivers, many are. This month, let us recognize and honor the hardworking caregivers in our community.

Eileen's Story

Eileen met the love of her life, Roy, when she was 18-years-old. Decades later, Roy was fighting a losing battle with recurrent colon cancer. In her story, Eileen describes caring for Roy in the final weeks of his life, grieving the loss of her love, and finding a new life and focus after his passing.

Caring for Caregivers

Are you caring for your spouse, parent, or other loved one? Allow yourself to practice self-care, too. The Family Caregiver Alliance at the National Center on Caregiving offers a wealth of ideas for reducing your stress, finding help, improving communication, and maintaining your overall health and well being.

A long-time supporter of Dinners with Love, Cattails Restaurant in Brandon serves a feast fit for a Vermonter. Their menu features favorite comfort foods, like buffalo wings and mozzarella sticks. You can also find entrees, like Scallop Risotto and Mardi Gras Chicken, that are soon to become your favorites, too.
