WHITE HOUSE CHAMPIONS OF CHANGE
HONORING KHADIJA GURNAH

The White House Champions of Change Program honors everyday Americans doing extraordinary things in their communities. http://www.whitehouse.gov/champions

American Muslim Health Professionals' (AMHP) "Connecting Muslims to Coverage" Program Manager, Khadija Gurnah, is honored as one of the White House Champions of Change leading local efforts to advance the goals of the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

Khadija Gurnah helped AMHP launch the first national grassroots initiative of its kind in the Muslim American community. Gurnah said this started out as a small program, but AMHP knew that they wanted to make a difference and let people know what the Affordable Care Act was, so they embarked on a mission to spread awareness. With a limited budget, AMHP mobilized 81 partners and ultimately helped to enroll thousands of people under comprehensive, affordable health plans.

BACKGROUND

Health insurance coverage is vital in the American Muslim community. Many Muslims do not have employer provided health insurance; in fact, 20% are self-employed, 29% are under-employed and 17% are unemployed. Comparing plans and signing up is a daunting process for those facing language barriers or complicated health conditions.

OUR STRATEGY

In 2014, AMHP launched “Connecting Muslims to Coverage”. We hired a program manager who trained and oversaw 7 community liaisons leading outreach in their respective states, as well as two interns. In the span of 3 months, AMHP fostered relationships with 81 partner organizations that collectively hosted 119 enrollment events, resulting in 27,116 individuals reached and a total of 1,662 successful enrollments.

Through this campaign, we realized the need for trusted messengers who could connect with Muslim communities and educate them about the the benefits and requirements of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and the importance of getting covered.

#GetCovered, ROUND 2: HOW YOU CAN HELP

The second phase of “Connecting Muslim to Coverage” is a six-month process estimated to cost around $50,000. This budget will cover program expenses including outreach materials, the training and supervising of 13 state leads, enrollment events and building and maintaining a user-friendly website solely dedicated to ACA outreach within the Muslim community.

Help us connect Muslims to coverage by contributing towards this initiative. Our communities are in dire need of health coverage. Click on the orange button above to be directed to our VoxCause fundraising page.
