Assalam Alaikum
I’m excited to share some important updates about AMHP, key initiatives for the upcoming year and new members who have joined the organization in a leadership role.  In March of this year, the Board of Directors convened in Northern Virginia for a two-day strategic planning retreat to determine three key areas of focus for the organization:

1. Advocacy (Connecting Muslims to Coverage)
2. Health Programs (Enabled Muslims, Mental Health, Health Education & Outreach)
3. Career Development
We have also been actively recruiting board members and program managers to oversee key initiatives and are excited to have the following individuals join our team:  Ghada Khan and Amanda Quraishi (Board of Directors), Arij Elmi (Program Manager for Mental Health), Mehvish Khan (Intern for Connecting Muslims to Coverage) and Sarah Dar as Program Coordinator. We are still recruiting for positions on the board as well as Program Manager for Career Development and would welcome resumes from interested candidates.
Over the next few months, we will provide more details on each of the three areas of focus.  In the meantime, please join us for our next upcoming webinar on Muslim Women and their Health in partnership with the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) on Thursday, May 22 at 12pm EST.  We will also be hosting a networking event during the 51st Annual Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) Convention that will be held over labor day weekend. Stay tuned to our website for more details.

Arshia Wajid
AMHP President

AMHP Invited to The White House

Arshia Wajid (AMHP's President), Khizer Hussain (AMHP's Senior Advisor) and Khadija Gurnah (Program Manager) were invited to the White House earlier this month for a special reception where President Obama and the First Lady thanked and celebrated grassroots community leaders who helped to enroll 8.2 million Americans in affordable health care. The President expressed his sincere gratitude for the critical role these leaders played in achieving this milestone. Other invited guests included Dr. Azher Quader and Abrar Quader of the Illinois-based Compassionate Care Network (CCN) and Madiha Tariq of the Michigan-based Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services (ACCESS).

AMHP was recognized for its "GetCovered" campaign to educate Muslim Americans about their health insurance options. Over the course of three months, AMHP partnered with 81 organizations to coordinate 119 events, reaching 27,116 individuals and successfully enrolling 1,662 people in health care coverage. We were honored to be a part of the White House reception and represent all of the volunteers and partners who worked tirelessly to make this campaign a success.

Summer Food Service Program (SFSP)

#AMHPxDCS #MuslimHealth #SFSP

In 2012, 49 million individuals experienced food insecurity at some point during the year, many of them children.

AMHP is collaborating with the Department of Children's Services to help launch the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP).SFSP is a federally funded program that reimburses sponsors for serving free and nutritious meals to low-income children during the summer months.

Please contact Khadija Gurnah at if your organization (mosque, school, community center) is interested in serving as a potential site for implementing SFSP in the following six states: Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin.

The Affordable Care Act, the new national health care law, offers free preventive services such as cancer screenings. Join us to learn how women can and should take advantage of these new opportunities. We will also share information about the basics of health insurance for those who are newly insured.
