Having no insurance or insurance that does not cover essential health care means that any illness can create financial hardship. This year, medical bills were the #1 cause of personal bankruptcy in the U.S.
Health insurance coverage is especially important in the American Muslim community. Many Muslims do not have employer provided health insurance; in fact, 20% are self-employed, 29% are under-employed and 17% are unemployed.
In 2013, AMHP launched “Connecting Muslims to Coverageâ€. In the span of 3 months, AMHP fostered relationships with 81 partner organizations that collectively hosted 119 enrollment events resulting in 27,116 individuals reached and a total of 1,662 successful enrollments.
Through this campaign, we realized the need for trusted messengers who could connect with Muslim communities and educate them about the the benefits and requirements of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and the importance of getting covered. Comparing plans and signing up was a daunting and confusing process for those facing language barriers or complicated health conditions, but AMHP was able to simplify and facilitate the enrollment process.
