Important Information about Flu Vaccine Allocation and Ordering
The Ontario Pharmacists Association has heard from a number of members who are having difficulty accessing allocations of flu vaccine through their various wholesalers as part of this year’s Universal Influenza Immunization Program (UIIP). We are working closely with the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care as well as the Canadian Association for Pharmacy Distribution Management (CAPDM) to resolve any supply issues and we will provide more information as soon as possible.
In the meantime, OPA has been asked to remind members about changes to the ordering process which were put in place for the 2016-17 UIIP. Flu vaccine is no longer to be ordered by individual dose. Instead, orders are to be placed by unit, with each unit consisting of 10 doses. So, pharmacies that require 10 doses would need to order 1 unit; for 100 doses, an order of 10 units would be placed. There is a cap on vaccine orders of 20 units (200 doses), unless approval for a larger quantity has been granted by the wholesaler and Public Health. Pharmacy team members are asked to review all orders to ensure that they reflect actual supply needs.
We will continue to monitor this situation and update members if and when new information becomes available, and members can direct any questions about this year’s UIIP to
