From its start on Ash Wednesday until its conclusion on Easter Sunday, Lent has been a traditional time for fasting or giving something up or abstinence.

Mark holding a 3 day old lambThe word Lent comes from the Anglo Saxon word lencten, which means "spring".

Many Christians will use Lent to commit to fasting, choosing to abstain from certain foods, habits or vices.

The fasting and abstinence is meant to mirror the experience of Jesus Christ and his experience of fasting in the desert.

From our Traditional Chinese Medicine point of view

  • The Liver (yin energy) and the Gall Bladder (yang energy) are represented by the wood element, which is a strong, rooted manifestation, also representing (new) growth.

  • The Liver stores blood and regulates a smooth flow of Chi around the body.

  • Anger causes imbalance in the liver. Kindness, Self-Expansion, Forgiveness its virtues.

  • Indecisiveness is related to the Gall Bladder while Courage is its virtue.

  • The liver can have 80% of its energy blocked before it becomes manifested in illness.

  • Pushing the body to its limits depletes the Liver. Walking and juggling strengthen it.

  • Planning & visualising stressful tasks aids seeing the wood for the trees. It's calming.
