Sacred Harp Online Resources II
Last month's newsletter concentrated on audio and video recordings of Sacred Harp singing. This month's is going to step back a bit and identify two key Sacred Harp resources.
The first is Sacred Harp Singing, the web site of the Sacred Harp Musical Heritage Association which publishes the annual Minutes of Sacred Harp Singings and hosts Camp Fasola, an annual day camp for the teaching and singing Sacred Harp.
The second is Dr. Warren Steel's site , also called Sacred Harp Singing. It is more comprehensive, contains sections contributed by other authors, and numerous links to off-page Sacred Harp resources.
They are practically canonical; if you go nowhere else, these two will either directly answer your questions or point you to answers for pretty much any- and every-thing Sacred Harp. |

Sacred Harp Singing in Europe
Jesse Pearlman Karlsberg (a doctoral student at Emory University and Vice President of the Sacred Harp Publishing Company) has written two excellent articles about the development of Sacred Harp in Europe.
"Come Sound His Praise Abroad" provides an overview and then addresses Sacred Harp activities in Europe in the Fall of 2012, including the United Kingdom Sacred Harp Convention, Camp Fasola Europe, and the 1st Polish Sacred Harp Convention.
A second article, "To Meet To Part No More" , is focused on how Sacred Harp took root in Ireland and the first Ireland Sacred Harp Singing Convention conducted in 2011. Both are worth a read and may provide food for thought about how to grow Sacred Harp in Detroit. |
