Improve Your Immune System With Nutrition!

Did you know 70-80% of your immune system is located in your gut? There are many things that can disrupt the beneficial bacteria in your gut, including antibiotics. If you fail to reinoculate the gut with the good bacteria following a course of antibiotics, you may feel the effects without knowing the cause.

My personal experience with immune issues began at two years old, after taking a three week course of antibiotics to treat Lyme Disease. My immune system began to react to the slightest challenge. I was constantly getting colds and viruses, even though my nutrition and lifestyle habits were healthy. For a long time I was of the mindset that if you ate properly there was no need for additional supplements. However, I have since realized I was very wrong. Last Spring I introduced a few supplements and made a few changes to heal my gut, and have experienced a remarkable change. Boost Your Immune System with Exercise!

 

This past month I have had a lot of patients come in with either the flu, or a really nasty cold.  We are all exposed to bacteria and viruses on a daily basis, and the best way to fight these off and stay healthy is with a strong immune system.  Since we can not completely avoid being exposed to these bacteria and viruses the best way to prevent getting sick is to find a way to boost your own immune system.  How do I do that you ask?

There are several tings that you can do to help boost your immune system.  Eat a nutritious diet full of antioxidant rich fruits and vegetables; get enough sleep; stay hydrated on a daily basis; minimize stress when ever possible; exercise regularly; and maintain your regular chiropractic treatments.  I just read a recent article on how exercise can help boost our immune systems and it will be the focus of this month’s blog. Tension Headaches…The Most Common Type of Headaches

mong adults “stress headaches”, also known as tension headaches, are the most type of headaches.  These types of headaches can last anywhere from 30 minutes to days, and many times occur during the day.  A lot of the time, symptoms will be described as “constant band-like pain or tightness”.  There can also be pressure around the forehead and the back of the head and neck.  To help distinguish between tension headaches and migraines that I talked about last month, tension headaches do not usually affect vision, strength, balance, cause stomach pain, nausea or vomiting. (Read More)

Are Cell Phones Safe? Not for Sperm!

Until now the evidence has been inconclusive on the short and long term safety of using cell phones. A recent study entitled, “Habits of cell phone usage and sperm quality – does it warrant attention?” was published in Reproductive Biomedicine Online. This study found that men who frequently talk more than 1 hour a day on their cell phones, or talk when their cell phones are attached to a charger, have sperm concentrations half of those who don’t. Another risk factor in decreasing sperm concentration to abnormal levels is carrying cell phones less than 20 inches from the groin.

In general, male sperm quality has been declining in Western countries accounting for 40% of infertility problems among couples. This was a fairly small study involving 106 men, but the findings are very interesting and scary. (Read More)
