April showers are bringing awesome May authors, events, and hopefully flowers! Christopher Moore (The Serpent of Venice) is stopping by next week with his audiobook narrator and a lute player (yeah, that's right -- A LUTE PLAYER). We're celebrating Children's Book Week with three amazing authors of kid lit. We're hosting our second Open Mic. And these are just the tip of the events iceberg. We've also got two new book groups. Join us for a very special event featuring bestselling author Christopher Moore and audiobook narrator, Euan Morton, in honor of Moore’s newest novel The Serpent of Venice. They'll be taking questions, performing passages from the book, and signing!

Who needs Saturday morning cartoons when you can come to WORD for Saturday morning storytime? Each week we'll read a different picture book, from the classics to new favorites! Recommended for kids aged 3-6, but everyone is welcome.

Amy Rowland and The Transcriptionist
Tuesday, May 13, 7:30 p.m.

New York Times veteran Amy Rowland presents her debut novel The Transcriptionist, which follows one woman’s quest to identify a Jane Doe. While it asks probing questions about journalism and ethics and about the decline of the newspaper and the failure of language, The Transcriptionist is also the story of a woman’s effort to establish a place for herself in an increasingly alienating world.

Rowland will be in conversation with Meredith Lippman, of the Hudson County Office of Cultural & Heritage Affairs.

In honor of Children’s Book Week, WORD welcomes authors Jorge Aguirre (Giants Beware!), Michelle Knudsen (The Dragon of Trelian), and Aaron Starmer (The Riverman) for a panel discussion about writing for children, kid lit favorites, fantasy, and more.

Musician and author Len Vlahos (The Scar Boys) teams up with Lori Majewski (Mad World) and Chris Butler (The Waitresses) to host our next Open Mic. They'll each introduce their own work and perform.

Latin American Noir with McSweeney's and Fluent City
Tuesday, May 20, 7:30 p.m.

McSweeney’s Quarterly and Fluent City present a conversation on Latin American crime fiction with editor/translator Jeffrey Gray and translator Anna Kushner, moderated by Valeria Moundjian, and in honor of McSweeney’s newest Quarterly. Issue 46 presents thirteen crime stories from Latin America.

Pitchapalooza with the Book Doctors

Pitchapalooza is American Idol for books (only kinder and gentler). Twenty writers will be selected at random to pitch their book. Each writer gets one minute—and only one minute! At Pitchapalooza, judges will help you improve your pitch, not tell you how bad it is.
