Maryland Hosts Statewide Brownfield Conference

November 16 from 8:30 AM - 4:00 PM

This free virtual conference will focus on post-assessment funding sources for recreational sites, turning brownfields to greenfields and ballfields, and how environmental justice can grow green community refuges.

Virginia Pursues Creative Options for Brownfield Redevelopment

VDEQ co-hosted the recent 2022 Virginia Clean Energy Summit in Richmond, Virginia on October 20-21. As part of that event, members of the VDEQ Brownfields and Voluntary Remediation Program (VRP) Meade Anderson and Lucas Hamelman participated in the panel discussion, "Re-Energizing Brownfields: Creative Energy (and Economic) Solutions" along with other brownfield and clean energy professionals. Topics included opportunities and obstacles in clean energy redevelopment on brownfield sites, regional success stories, and federal EPA and Virginia Brownfields Restoration and Economic Redevelopment Assistance Fund (VBAF) grant resources to assist in site assessment, site cleanup, and reuse planning for brownfield sites. The Virginia Brownfields team continues to pursue creative and common sense redevelopment options for brownfields across the state including a focus on Brightfields development opportunities.

Virginia Brownfield Grants Available

FY23 brownfield remediation grant applications are being accepted until November 18, 2022. Assessment and planning grants are accepted year-round.

The Virginia Brownfields Restoration and Economic Redevelopment Assistance Fund (VBAF) program targets projects or phases of work associated with the restoration and redevelopment of brownfield sites in Virginia that will generate additional private investment and job creation in the immediate future.

Projects are evaluated and grants are awarded based on environmental benefit, potential for redevelopment and reuse of the site, economic benefit, use or reuse of existing infrastructure, and/or the limited ability to draw on other funding sources.

VBAF Grant Types

Assessment and Planning (funded up to $50,000 each)
Site Remediation (funded up to $500,000 each)

VBAF grants require a 1:1 match. Other grant funding, including EPA Brownfields grant funds, can be used as a match. Assessment & Planning grants can fund site activities such as Phase I Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs), Phase II ESAs, feasibility studies, asbestos and lead paint surveys, site redevelopment planning, etc. Currently, remediation grants can be used for asbestos and lead-based paint abatement.

Over $14 million has been committed to Virginia communities across the state since 2012, including over 158 assessment and planning grants and 34 site remediation grants.

TAB Tours Hazelwood Green in Pennsylvania

The National Association of Development Organizations (NADO) Conference was held in Pittsburgh on October 15-18. Katie See of WVU TAB worked closely with Blase Leven of KSU TAB and Colette Santasieri of NJIT TAB to coordinate a tour of the former brownfield site, Hazelwood Green, and present about TAB services during a learning lab. Marvin Six and Jacob Keeney of Business Development Corporation (BDC) of the Northern Panhandle joined the TAB providers to provide a case study of their brownfield redevelopment project at Beech Bottom, WV. The sessions were well-attended by engaged participants.

WVDEP Assessment Grant Webinar

October 27 from 12-1 PM

WVU TAB is teaming up with WVDEP to review the $2M EPA brownfield assessment grant. Representatives from WVU TAB, the Brownfields Assistance Centers, and WVDEP will be on hand to share more about the EPA Brownfields program, assessment grants, and WVDEP’s target areas and priorities with this funding. Learn how your community can access support for site assessments and planning through WVDEP’s funding.
