News from Point Nine – May 2021
Hi <<First Name>>,

As we celebrate Coinbase’s listing on the Nasdaq, Christoph shared a few reflections on our investment into the company.
While Coinbase is a company that we were (unfortunately) cheering for from the sidelines, fortunately there are lots of amazing startups where we jumped onto the playing field (or whatever the appropriate sports metaphor is for that), and we’re thrilled to announce four additional ones in today’s issue of your favorite VC newsletter. Or √9+9⁰ to make it more on-brand.
We couldn't be more excited to welcome our latest P9 Family member, CloudTalk, which is building the world’s sexiest best Cloud-based call center software for sales and support teams. If that doesn’t sound very sexy, keep in mind that this is exactly what people said about Zendesk in 2008. We’ll spare you the “how it started / how it’s going” meme pic, but do check out CloudTalk’s announcement and Julia’s post on why we invested.
CloudTalk isn’t the only P9 Family company that makes communication in the age of remote work a bit easier. With an easy-to-use product that doesn’t require any downloads or app installs, Whereby is taking on the Zooms and Google Meets of this world. If you tend to agree that most humans aren’t made for spending 10 hours a day in front of Zoom, take a look at Whereby!
Intenseye is making workers' lives in the industrial work environment better by keeping an (intensively ML trained) eye on their safety. We invested over a year ago and are thrilled to finally publicly welcome them to the P9 Family! For our overview on why we invested, check out Ricardo’s latest post and Techcrunch’s summary here!
Soda is up next! If you’re wondering why the heck we’ve invested in a sparkling mineral water company, hear us out. Soda is building an enterprise-grade monitoring platform for data products. We led the seed almost a year ago, but before we even announced it to the world, Soda already did a Series A with Singular. Check out Louis’ write up on why we’re so excited about it here.

Huge congrats to the team at Sqreen on their acquisition by Datadog! (paid in cash, not Dogecoins)
We'll miss you, guys, but you know that you'll always stay a part of the P9 Family.
Lightspeed has acquired our portfolio company Vend to power their global retail expansion. Huge congrats to all current and former Venders who've made this excellent outcome possible. Fun fact – New Zealand-based Vend was one of P9's first SaaS investments.
UserZoom acquired EnjoyHQ (formerly known as NomNom) to help businesses better manage and understand their customer insights! Fun fact: Christoph and Ricardo first met whilst working with NomNom.
Congrats 15Five on their acquisition of Emplify, an employee engagement management tool. With Emplify’s support, 15Five is continuing its mission to simplify the challenges of HR professionals and managers around the world.
Mission Barns raised an additional $24m to fuel its vision to become the leading provider of lab grown pork and, hopefully, put an end to factory farming.
Mambu goes from strength to strength! Here’s a little overview of their journey from Day 1 to fintech unicorn! continues to expand its footprint globally, they’ve just signed a partnership with Saudia Cargo strengthening its position as a leading distribution channel for airlines!

Christoph chimes in on HR, with his latest post on how to hire a VP Marketing.
Louis walks us through 3 trends to watch in computer vision, following his discussions with Vagran from SuperAnnotate.
Julia gives B2B marketplace founders a deep dive into what it takes to raise capital in 2020 in her first ever B2B Marketplace Funding Napkin.
Ricardo shares some of his insights on how to spot a B2B diamond in the rough in his latest appearance on The Seedcamp Podcast.
Meanwhile, Christoph talks about the state of European startups, VC and our investment thesis with our friends at The Family.

If you’re an early stage startup and thinking about building your HR function, Maddy Cross's latest piece on 9 tricks to build your talent acquisition function is a must read!
Amy Liu gives us the run down on Sales Ops (a.k.a SOPs) based on her experience at Anaplan, Framer and Uber.
...And because we love the number 9, here’s a follow up piece for those of you that are a little further along by Chris Brown on 9 tips around talent once you’ve raised your Series A.

We’re also honored to have been featured as one of the top investors on Dealroom in 2021!

Our P9 Virtual Summit is returning and will take place between 21 - 25 June 2021. Expect to learn, exchange ideas and hang out with other passionate entrepreneurs and operators from the P9 Family, top industry experts and of course our awesome speakers. Previously we have opened up a few spots to individuals outside of the P9 Family and this year will be no different. So if you would like to join us, make sure to apply using this Typeform

Last but not least: After 10 years of people asking us what our logo meant (see evidence here), we finally retired the “invisible 9” (🤦🏼‍♂️) and replaced it with one that you can’t miss. You can check it out here – feedback, thoughts, etc are always welcome. :-)
That’s all for now folks! Stay safe and healthy,

The P9 Team  🎉
