December 6 - Day 12: International Volunteer Day

Dear <<First Name>>

Did you know:

December 6 is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women in Canada. December 6, 2019 marks 30 years since this tragedy occurred. Established in 1991 by the Parliament of Canada, this day marks the anniversary of the murders in 1989 of 14 young women and injured 10 others at l'École Polytechnique de Montréal. They died because they were women.

What will you do?
The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women is about remembering victims; it is also a time to take action. The 14 women at l’École Polytechnique de Montréal, were killed in a gender-based act of violence.  Please take the time to read their names either silently or out loud.  They shall not be forgotten.
They were:
  • Geneviève Bergeron 21
  • Hélène Colgan 23
  • Nathalie Croteau 23
  • Barbara Daigneault 22
  • Anne-Marie Edward 21
  • Maud Haviernick 29
  • Barbara Klucznik Widajewicz 31
  • Maryse Laganière 25
  • Maryse Leclair 23
  • Anne-Marie Lemay 22
  • Sonia Pelletier 23
  • Michèle Richard 21
  • Annie St-Arneault 23
  • Annie Turcotte 21
Why a National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women?
As well as commemorating the 14 young women whose lives ended in an act of gender-based violence that shocked the nation, December 6 now represents an opportunity for everyone to reflect on the phenomenon of violence against women in our society. It is also an opportunity to consider the women and girls for whom violence is a daily reality, and to remember those who have died as a result of gender-based violence. And finally, it is a day on which communities and individuals can speak out and consider concrete actions to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls and its impact on victims, their families and friends.
