Does an effective corporate ethics and compliance (E&C) program provide a competitive advantage?
In the first interactive "Ask the GlobalEthicist" Q&A monthly column The GlobalEthicist (Andrea Bonime-Blanc, CEO of GEC Risk Advisory) tackles the captioned strategic question posed by Sonsoles Rubio Reinoso, Chief Compliance Officer of Spanish-based, global electric utility, Iberdrola.
In the column (available here: http://bit.ly/Vs0LTX), E&C programs are first looked at from a historical context, likening their current status to that of corporate responsibility and sustainability programs about a decade ago. While not broadly incorporated yet into global companies in an effective way, most companies know by now to pay lip service to having such an E&C program. The column then provides a snapshot of what an effective E&C program looks like and provides a rationale and business case as to why an effective E&C program can indeed provide a competitive advantage.
