Launch of GEC Risk Advisory Council
With this, our second GEC Risk Newsletter, we are very pleased to announce the launch of the GEC Risk Advisory Council made up of seven luminaries from the corporate, academic and non-profit sectors - among them CEOs, academic stars, non-profit and executive leaders in their respective fields. They are all trusted advisors, extremely smart, high integrity folks whom I am privileged to have as friends and colleagues. To meet them, please visit the new GEC Risk Advisory page on our website: http://www.gecrisk.com/advisory-council/.
September is quickly coming to a close. As has become unfortunately usual, this month has witnessed a parade of governance, risk and reputation stories starting and ending seemingly with JP Morgan. The crowning story was the announcement by JP Morgan's CEO, Jamie Dimon, of a new "commitment to compliance" including a planned breathtaking expenditure of $4 billion and intended hiring of 5000 new compliance personnel over the next few years. All this, after mounting investigations, settlements and continuing threatened prosecutions from a variety of US and foreign government agencies. One can only ask: could a more strategic preventative governance, risk and reputation management plan (not just a compliance plan) have cost less and been overall more effective? And wouldn't a more strategic approach also be more enduring?

Read the two most recent GlobalEthicist Columns for Ethical Corporation Magazine on "Cyber-Insecurity" & "Risky Business"
In one of these columns, I tackle the issue of cyber-risk and "cyber-insecurity" and what the average senior manager, executive or board director (who isn't an IT or InfoSec expert) should do to protect their organization (http://bit.ly/134sUg2). In "Risky Business" I lay out the big buckets of risk global organizations inevitably confront with an eye to understanding how those buckets of risk relate to reputation risk - see what you think: http://bit.ly/1cYlLWk.
