From July 6-10, HLF conducted its Annual Urban Youth Yoga Workshop at the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, NY. Teachers were given tools to take with them to support their practice and be able to use in the teaching of Mindfulness and Yoga to Youth. Two graduates of our After School, Mentoring, and Work force development graduates, Oba Joyner and Ramon Brown, taught some techniques and shared personal stories from their 12 years of experience with HLF. Special thanks to the fantastic Sat Bir Singh Khalsa, Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, for his in depth presentation on Youth, Yoga, and Mindfulness. He is such an inspiration and is currently working on the first ever medical textbook on the principles and practices of yoga in health care. Once again, as always at Omega, we were blessed with an amazing group of people and were able to create lifelong friendships. Special Thanks to the Omega staff especially Alla, Carole, Gillian, Veronica, Michael and Skip!! Our next workshop at Omega will take place August 1-5, 2016, and our First Meditation Retreat will take place on August 26th-28th, 2016.

Civic Education Project
Oba Joyner and Larry Jackson, two of the students from our initial group who have over ten years of experiencing teaching yoga, and who are now facilitating these groups, spoke to a group of high school students about their experiences from going through the Holistic Life Foundations After-School, Mentoring, and Workforce Development programs. They also led some mindfulness practices on the breath and led a meditation. The speaking engagement was sponsored by North Western University and was held at the Friedman Auditorium at the Peabody Conservatory, in Baltimore.
"It was a fun experience talking (with Oba) to a group of high school kids. We included some fun facts in our own introductions to lighten the mood and make the participants laugh. We spent forty minutes on stage talking about how the Holistic Life Foundation began, the breath, our experiences coming up in the program, working with different age groups, and how yoga has helped us grow physically and mentally. Also, a lot about working with the kids in the West Baltimore community and in our neighborhoods. This was the first time Oba and I spoke on stage without the A team (Ali, Atman, Andy) present. We had fun and a lot of laughter came from the audience so I think our mission was completed well."
Staff in Osterloh
HLF extends a huge thank you to Maria Kluge and the Osterloh Haus der Achtsamkeit
(House of Mindfulness) in Germany for hosting many of our our teammates for a yoga workshop led by Angela Farmer and Victor van Kooten, July 16 – 25, 2015. Carlillian Thompson (Robert W. Coleman Principal), Vance Benton (Patterson Principal), Patterson teachers John Gross-Bey, Nancy Holter and Kelly O’Brien, HLF teachers Jamar Peete and Jerron Wallace, and HLF Director of Outreach Welford McLellan Jr. were all enlightened while attending the awesome interactive workshop. Angela and Victor taught the participants the importance of knowing and understanding one’s body while practicing Yoga, how to develop and enhance their personal Yoga practice, how to teach Yoga to others, as well as a host of important tools. Osterloh staff prepared fresh delicious Ayurvedic meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as well as provided an hour long full-body massage to all attendees. In addition to the yoga workshop, there were numerous exciting recreational activities including swimming in a local lake, hiking the Alps, and participating in a traditional Sweat Lodge Ceremony.
Thanks again to Maria Kluge, the Osterloh staff, Angela Farmer and Victor van Kooten for an amazing retreat!
