A note from the Executive Director

Summer is officially here and just as the seasons change so do the needs in our region. As we delve into vetting our next project, we also identify the most pressing social issues our community faces.  I am thankful for the individuals who recognize the power of collective giving and are willing to invest in positive social returns in our own backyard. As we embark on another project this year, please consider sharing the must! story with others so that we can grow our giving capacity in even bigger ways.
Warm Regards,
Becky

Project Update: Food Bank - Children's Farmer's Markets

The positive press and feedback from community members we have received from investing in these Children's Farmer's Markets has been incredible. The following data is what has been accomplished in the 2015-2016 school year:
  • We successfully funded all 9 site locations.
  • All nine north county Children’s Farmers Markets are strategically located at schools with 60-90% of their students qualifying for free or reduce priced lunches.
  • During the past year, these markets provided over 117,000 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables to over 9,000 children and their families.
  • The fresh produce from these markets provided over 97,500 meals.
And... the kids loved it too.  Here are a few quotes from some of the children we served this year
  • “They have food for us and we need food.” –3rd grader
  • “I like to get food for my family. My favorites are oranges and carrots. We will try this.” – kindergartener
  • “We get to pick stuff and we have them for dinner. We eat carrots, green beans, and chicken for dinner. Oranges for breakfast” –1st grader

Youth Board

As the must! charities’ youth board just rounded out their school year commitment, the board was able to gift $10,000 into the community.  After a year of education on philanthropy, local non-profits, learning how to give in a well thought out way, and volunteering in the north county the youth board recently announced where they would be investing their dollars. Donor Community Tour

Recently a few of our donors and myself embarked upon a joint community tour with a few donors and staff from the San Luis Obispo Community Foundation.  It was great to bring both of our organizations together so that we could learn what each do respectively, as well as share successful programs that each organization is investing in.

We toured the Boys & Girls Club in Paso Robles, where we were greated with personal tour guides to walk us through the hands on enrichment programs with high powered learning, and our donors also were entertained with a panel interview from Boys & Girls attending "The Club" our pilot middle school program in Atascadero, as well as The Teen Monologues put on by Community Action Partners Program.

We both believe in collaboration and who knows, maybe this will lead to more collaborative giving down the line...
