May 2022

April marks the end of the 2022 tax season and we couldn't be more proud of our team. Together with Goodwill VITA we were able to successfully file nearly 2400 households' tax returns and bring more than $4.3 million in refunds and tax credits to Tulsa’s economy! Of the total amount returned, $1.2M was a result of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and $1.6M from the Child Tax Credit. Both of these credits help low-income households offset the cost of basic necessities such as food, housing, and childcare. We are honored to help so many families receive their entire refund without paying a penny to file.

If you know someone who still needs to file their taxes we will begin our summer tax season on June 6th and can file for tax years 2018-2021. To receive a notification when we begin taking appointments, send us an email

SoonerCare Enrollment

With tax season in our rearview mirror, our attention now turns to SoonerCare enrollment. Since we began last July, our navigators have helped over 700 clients enroll in SoonerCare and over 400 clients enroll in SNAP benefits. This work is made fruitful through the relentless passion of our Navigators to help those in need. (Learn more about one of our Medicaid navigators at the end of this newsletter).

Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP) and the Finacial Empowerment Center

Our relationship with Restore Hope Ministries continues to flourish, as our navigators provide the best customer service possible to ERAP applicants. Almost daily we hear from clients about how their interaction with a navigator has relieved their anxiety and stress concerning the status of their application. To date, we have helped Restore Hope process 2669 applications, which resulted in more than $10M of rental assistance being distributed!

As part of our work with Restore Hope Ministries, we are partnering with the Financial Empowerment Center (FEC) to refer ERAP applicants to the FEC's services in order to provide greater financial stability. The FEC is Tulsa’s only one-on-one professional financial counseling service offered at no cost to all Tulsa residents, regardless of income. Through the assistance of certified financial counselors, clients can acquire personalized guidance on a variety of personal financial matters including:
  • Taking control of debt
  • Dealing with debt collectors
  • Improving credit scores
  • Building savings
  • Creating a budget and a plan to stick to it
  • Finding safe and affordable financial products
  • Other services based on clients' need
We are eager to see how referring clients to this valuable resource now will set them up for greater financial success in the future!

Navigator Spotlight

Get to know one of our amazing navigators!

1️⃣  What were you doing before Tulsa Responds? Before Tulsa Responds I worked as a bartender at a cocktail bar downtown.

2️⃣  How long have you been with Tulsa Responds? I’ve been with Tulsa Responds for nearly a year and a half!

3️⃣  What have you been up to since joining Tulsa Responds? I started at Tulsa Responds as a navigator for the Connects team assisting families to get reduced internet for at-home learning during the pandemic. Since then I have transitioned to the Medicaid team where I help Tulsans get access to SoonerCare and SNAP benefits. I recently also finished my second year working with the VITA project doing taxes for free.

4️⃣  It's not unusual for you to be on the front lines, serving so many families in need. What drives your passion to help so many? So many folks in Tulsa are in need of assistance but they just don’t know where to look. Through door-to-door outreach, food distributions, and enrolling people in programs, we meet these folks, listen to their stories, and help them gain access to the benefits they need. Knowing at the end of the day you’ve helped someone else make their life just a little easier is all the motivation I need.

5️⃣  If you had a magic wand and could help solve a major problem in Tulsa, what would it be? Unfortunately, the houseless community is a wildly underrepresented group in Tulsa and they are suffering. If I had a magic wand I would use it to get these folks off the streets and help them gain access to everything they need to lead safe and secure lives.

6️⃣  Why do you enjoy working with Tulsa Responds? The sole purpose of Tulsa Responds is to help people; to respond to the needs of Tulsans and give assistance however we can. I love what we do because all we do is help. Even if we don't have the specific resources to help someone, we'll get them in touch with the right people. I couldn’t be more proud to work with my fellow navigators doing good in Tulsa.
