Hello <<First Name>>,

We're excited to kick-off a brand new tax season and to work with community partners like you to spread the word about Get Your Refund Tulsa's free tax filing assistance for households making under $58,000. Get Your Refund Tulsa is a joint effort between Goodwill Tulsa and Tulsa Responds with the goal of helping low-income households receive the full benefit of their tax refunds without using paid preparers. We will be providing updates throughout the season that we hope you will share throughout your communities.

Below you will find general information about EITC Awareness Day and our service. Attached is a flyer in English and Spanish with our website and appointment times. Contact us if you'd like printed copies.

We would love the opportunity to speak with your organization about our free tax filing assistance, or to set up a dedicated time to assist your clients with tax prep. If you're interested in setting up a meeting to discuss, please send us an email!

Thanks for your partnership in making this our biggest tax season yet!

EITC Awareness Day

Earlier today, Tulsa Mayor G.T. Bynum declared Friday, Jan. 28, 2022 as EITC Awareness Day in Tulsa. To raise awareness of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the financial impact it can have on eligible Tulsa families, Get Your Refund Tulsa, a joint initiative of Tulsa Responds and Goodwill Tulsa, is sharing information about how to claim the EITC and utilize the free preparation services available this year. This tax benefit can increase annual refunds by thousands — though the amount per family varies depending on household income, family size and filing status.

Who’s Eligible for the EITC?

The IRS estimates four out of every five eligible taxpayers can claim and get the EITC. Even those who don’t earn enough to owe taxes should file to ensure they don’t miss out on credits owed to them. To be eligible, individuals must be a U.S. citizen or a resident alien for the entire filing year and:
  • Have made less than $58,000
  • Possess a valid Social Security number
  • Are not married filing separately
  • Have an investment income below $10,000
Additionally, the EITC can be calculated based on 2021, 2020 or 2019 earnings. This means, even if individuals did not earn an income in 2021, they can use income from 2020 or 2019 to qualify for the EITC.

Why is it Important to File?

This year, Tulsa tax filers could see significant tax returns thanks to stimulus checks, the Child Tax Credit and the EITC:
  • If a tax filer has not received all of their stimulus checks from the last two years, they could receive them with their tax return.
  • If a filer has a child age 17 or younger, they are eligible to receive the second half of their Child Tax Credit (up to $1,600 per child).
  • If a filer missed any Advanced Child Tax Credit payments between July and December 2021, they could receive those with their return

Free Tax Support for Tulsa Families

An estimated 20% of eligible families in Tulsa do not file their taxes, causing them to miss out on the Earned Income Tax Credit, which averages $2,400 per household, but could be up to $6,700. Get Your Refund Tulsa is providing free professional tax services to eligible Tulsans to make it as easy as possible to file your taxes and take advantage of the many available credits often missed when filing.

Who Qualifies for Free Tax Assistance?

Tulsans earning less than $58,000 a year can take advantage of no-cost professional tax services at Goodwill Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites located across Tulsa. Last season, VITA filed more than 3,000 tax returns, totaling more than $4 million in refunds.

In-person and Remote Filing Options

VITA locations are taking appointments this year to reduce wait times and avoid crowding at tax sites. Schedule an appointment today or call (918) 900-0918 for more information.

Secure, virtual appointments are also available to those with reliable access to the internet and a device with a camera. Filers can securely upload their tax documents by visiting GetYourRefundTulsa.org, and will be contacted by a preparer to complete the filing and quality review processes over the phone.
