Kirkland Parks & Recreation Update

The many dead fish along the shore and in the swimming area is the result of an unusually warm winter that has allowed more growth of aquatic weeds that are pulling oxygen out of the water depleting amount for the perch.  Additionally these warmer temperatures are more conducive to bacteria growth.  When the yellow perch are congregating to spawn these (2) factors (low oxygen & increased bacteria) have the yellow perch dying off in greater numbers. It is a natural process for the perch to die after spawning and this cycle is usually cleaned up by osprey and eagles. This year there are too many of them. Parks is cleaning up the dead fish everyday.

Forbes Creek Bridge

The Juanita Bay causeway and Forbes Creek Bridge will remain open this summer while construction crews retrofit the Forbes Creek Bridge to handle small-scale earthquakes. On four nights late this summer, crews will have to detour automobiles around the bridge. Those detours will begin at 8 p.m. and continue until 5 a.m. People traveling by bike or by foot will continue to have access.
