Kirkland CERT

(Community Emergency Response Team) - Fall 2015

Kirkland CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) and the Kirkland Office of Emergency Management are now accepting registration for the Fall 2015 class.  This 8-week course will start on Thursday, September 10, 2015 and will be held the following 7 Thursdays from 6 to 9 PM at the Kirkland Seventh Day Adventist Church.  The Final Simulation Drill (required) will take place on November 14 from 2:30 to 9:00 PM
The CERT program educates residents in disaster preparedness and trains them in basic disaster response skills such as fire suppression, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations.  Using the training learned in the classroom and during the exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not available to help.
The cost for the 8-week course is $35 for those who live, work, or go to school in Kirkland; $50 for those outside of Kirkland.  Participants will receive a manual, helmet, reflective vest, backpack, and other emergency supplies.  The program is sponsored by Kirkland CERT, the Kirkland Office of Emergency Management, and the Greater Kirkland Citizen Corps Council.

North Juanita Road Closures

Several sections of North Juanita’s neighborhood roads will close Aug. 3 while contracted work crews apply a slurry seal to them that will extend their useful lives by five to 10 years.   Click here for more information on specific roads.

Odds and Ends Reminders

Kids Day - August 7th
Health Fair - August 28th

Forbes Creek Bridge Seismic Retrofit - From late June through September, work will be done to the existing Forbes Creek Bridge which is just north of Forbes Creek Dr along the Juanita Bay Park.  This project to retrofit the bridge for small-scale earthquakes will have minimal impacts to traffic except for four nighttime closures (8pm to 5am) in late September.  For a detour route and more information, see the project website.

100th Avenue Corridor - Following the 100th Avenue Corridor Study which was completed in 2014, the City of Kirkland is working to select a consultant to work on redesigning the section of 100th Avenue NE from NE 132nd Street at Juanita Elementary to NE 145th Street.  Consultants will likely be interviewed in August.  Work on the design will begin once the selected consultant is under contract this fall.  This is a major corridor in our neighborhood and represents a unique opportunity to improve safety and enhance our community.

I-405 Tolling - The I-405 express toll lanes between Bellevue and Lynnwood, set to open later this year, will help ease traffic on one of the state’s most congested corridors. Express toll lanes will give I-405 drivers a choice to travel faster by paying a toll. Toll rates will adjust depending on traffic, and drivers will pay the rate they see upon entering the lanes. Tolls can be paid with the current Good To Go! pass or by mail at a higher rate. To use the express toll lanes free, carpool drivers will need to a Good To Go! account and the new Flex Pass, set to HOV mode.  The Washington State Department of Transportation has created a video to prepare drivers and give an example of what future trips may look in the express toll lanes.
