February 2017 Glendale Art Association Palette Newsletter

Thursday, February 9th @ 7pm.

Guest Artist, Frank Lennartz

Frank Lennartz was fortunate to have his mother, long time Glendale artist, Margot Lennartz, introduce him to the magnificent world of fine art, becoming his art mentor and painting partner on many plein air trips throughout the Southwest. She also provided him guidance and encouragement to show his works at a myriad of art venues including Descanso Gardens.

Frank also studied with numerous prominent southwest plein air impressionists, such as Ted Goerschner and Kevin McPherson.

Emphasizing the impression or ‘mood’ of the moment reflected by the landscape became Frank’s signature style, which has opened doors to a number of exhibitions, most notably the Oil Painters of America’s (OPA) National and Regional exhibitions, The Carnegie Art Museum, the California Art Club’s juried Gold Medal Exhibitions, Weisman Museum of Art exhibitions and the CAC’s own gallery at the ‘El Molino Viejo’ in San Marino, CA. He has also received the prestigious Director's Choice Award by the Carnegie Art Museum where his painting is now part of their permanent collection.

Please join us this Thursday, February 9th, for Frank Lennartz’s demonstration on creating a mood in landscape oil painting. We hope to see your there.

Meetings are held at the Citibank Community Meeting Room, 2350 Honolulu Ave., Montrose. Entrance is at the rear of the building off the alley.

President’s Message

Greetings to all our new and long time members,

We would like to thank George Scribner for showing us how to add figures to landscapes at the January meeting. The digital presentation, painting demonstration and explanations were very informative and I was happy to add that information to my knowledge of painting. He made the scene appear so quickly and effortlessly.

Frank Lennartz, a well known Southern California plein air painter, will join us for the February 9th monthly meeting. He enjoys painting the “mood" of the landscape and has received many awards, including the California Art Club’s Gold Medal Award. I am looking forward to watching him show us his technique and approach to landscapes.

The Member’s Only Spring Show at McGroarty Art Center is on the calendar, with take-in scheduled for March 16th and pick-up about the 25th. Display T-panels have been ordered and received, which will enable us to hang more work, more quickly. It should be a fun show in the historic McGroarty house, which dates back to 1923. The Art Center was established in 1953 in the beautiful, classic stone and timber home of John Steven McGroarty, one of the founding members of the Glendale Art Association, so we’ve heard. What art work of yours can you imagine in this beautiful house? For more information on McGroarty Art Center, see their website here:

Did you pay your 2017 membership dues yet? Be sure to get your new GAA ID card with your currently paid membership, which will be valid until the end of the year. Fees may be paid with credit card (convenience fees apply) cash or check. Be ready for the members’ only show and other association activities.

See you at our next meeting on February 9th at the Citibank meeting room.

Happy, productive painting,

Diane M. Carter
