President’s Message

Greetings to all our new and long time members,

Thank you to all the participants in our December paint around at the holiday party/meeting (shown above). It was a lot of fun testing all the different materials and to see how they helped develop the style of each of the paintings. The holiday gift exchange was a fun success, and everyone enjoyed the food as well.

Our shared show at the San Fernando Valley Arts and Culture Center turned out great. Glendale Art Association members took numerous awards, including Best of Show, which went to Vicky Rees for "Shadows II". A complete list of the award winners follows this letter. The collaboration went so well that the San Fernando Valley Art Club is interested in working on another joint show with us in the future.

At the January meeting, we'll be starting the new year with a demonstration by the internationally known, not-to-be-missed artist, George Scribner. He will be showing us why and how to add the human figure to landscapes. I am always fascinated by his oil paintings’ colors and compositions and am interested in seeing how he accomplishes the work so quickly.

We are finalizing the model session for January 19th at BMAI in Montrose, which will be from 6pm to 9pm. Our female model, Taylor, will be the model with a new costume for this session. The address at BMAI is 2228 Florencita, Montrose. There will be snacks to munch on while you paint.

The March member's show at McGroarty Art Center is shaping up with a rough take-in date of March 16th and pick-up date on the 25th. It will be a fun, intimate show in the classic stone and timber house (Trivia; Mr. McGroarty was a founding member of the GAA in the 1920’s). What art work of yours can you imagine in this beautiful space?
If you haven't done so already, please be sure to pay your annual membership fee, which is due January 1st of the year and get your new membership card at the same time.

Looking ahead in the next few months, we will be holding elections for the board in March, so, if you would be interested in tossing your hat in the ring, please let us know. It's vital that as a non-profit, fully volunteer run organization that we all share the duty of board member and volunteer alike. Vicky Rees will be stepping down as newsletter/web coordinator and Vice-President to focus on her after-school art enrichment business and prepare to send off her next child to college in the fall. Personally, I am looking forward to more creative time as well. We both plan to continue volunteering where we can within our art organization.

I hope to see you at the next meeting, this Thursday, January 12th at the Citibank meeting room.

Happy painting,
Diane M. Carter
It's time for the LA Art show which runs January 11-15. If you are interested in visiting the show with a group of GAA members, a yearly tradition, please contact Diane Carter at If enough people sign up, we can get a good group discount. For more information on the show, visit
