March 2016 Glendale Art Association Palette Newsletter

Please join us for our next meeting on March 10th when we will meet Jenny Doh from Studio Crescendoh

Jenny Doh is nothing short of an artistic tornado, cranking out energetic and expressive paintings full of color and life. At any given time on instagram you can find her sharing photos of still lifes, portraits, fiber pieces and even abstracts.

Regarding Jenny's paintings, a person once told her that she liked her "whimsical angst." Jenny states that she "...really liked that description and I'm happy to classify my painting style as such." Jenny also describes her style as "magical realism," where she celebrates the essence and not just the likeness of her subjects, whether real or imagined.

Jenny is also the brain behind Studio Crescendoh in the Artist Village located in Santa Ana, California, where she resides. She teaches painting, fiber arts and also shows her works out of the space. Occasionally, she will host visiting artists who teach their art in the studio to learners who travel from all over to participate.

Jenny was born in Seoul, Korea and moved to the United States in 1974. She grew up in Bakersfield, California, is an alumni of UC Irvine and UCLA.

For our March meeting demonstration, Jenny will be sharing her approach for creating a portrait in oils. Come and experience some creative magic.

For more information about Jenny Doh, please visit her website, by clicking here.

Greetings to all our new and long time members,

Unfortunately, because of work and family obligations, our interim President Marina Rehrmann, has found it necessary to step down and hand the reins to someone else.  In response to this, at the March board meeting, the officers in attendance elected a new President, yours truly, Diane M. Carter, and a new Vice President, Vicky Rees. Vicky will continue as Digital Communications Chair, and will also be recruiting demonstrators for our monthly meetings.

I would like to send a heartfelt thank you to Marina and also to Dulcie Adams, our previous Vice President of many years, for their generous service to our organization. Both have contributed to GAA in many ways and their dedication to the arts and and our association has not gone unnoticed. Thank you so very much!!!

In this issue of the Palette you will find a description of all the open volunteer positions. Please consider contributing a little of your time to our organization so everyone can enjoy our group. As they say, “Many hands make light work.”

With shifts of leadership, new opportunities open up for others to volunteer within the organization. Currently, we are in need of a new Secretary/Scholarship Coordinator to fill my previous position. In addition to recording meeting minutes and keeping track of association documents, the secretary is also in charge of sharing the exciting news with area schools that we will have scholarships available to deserving graduating students who plan to pursue higher education in the arts. It is always gratifying to see a young person’s face light up when they realize there are others who want to help them succeed.

Speaking of scholarships… please be sure to RSVP for the monthly scholarship movie night (see details below in the Palette). Our next Movie night will be “Goya’s Ghost”, with Javier Bardem and Natalie Portman, a movie which garnered four out of five stars from the critics. Spend a pleasant lazy Sunday afternoon watching a movie with your art pals, while contributing to a great cause.

I want to thank everyone who submitted artwork to the DIGGs show these past few months. The exhibition was a big success and loaded with a lot of really great small works. Again, I would like to thank Hana and Kendyl at DIGGs Real Estate for contributing your time and space.

Plans are in the works for our next exhibition, the Spring Salon. Helena Bowman and I went on an adventurous field trip to investigate possible venues. The board ultimately decided to have the show at Norik’s Gallery on San Fernando Rd., in Glendale. It’s a great space and we are looking forward to sharing more information with you in the weeks to come. The opening reception is tentatively set for May 15th and the show will run through May 28th.

We have also been working on a revision to our association bylaws. Dick Heimbold, GAA’s Parliamentarian, is spearheading that effort and we should have a completed and approved version for you by the April meeting — possibly sooner.

Our demonstrator at the March meeting is an exuberant Santa Ana artist, Jenny Doh from Studio Crescendo. She has quite a resume and has even been interviewed by the Getty. She is going to demonstrate her technique for creating a portrait in oils. It’s sure to be an energetic and exciting demonstration.

As I mentioned earlier, Vicky Rees has agreed to take on the task of setting up demonstrators for the year so if you would like to recommend someone or if there is something in particular that you would like to learn about, please contact Vicky at

In the coming months you can also look for a re-designed and updated website which will be more user-friendly for individuals on a variety of platforms. We welcome any suggestions or feedback about changes you would like to see. Also, if you are interested in having your work included on the website members’ gallery, there is a modest $10 per year fee to have your name and contact information, as well as your art samples included on the website. Contact Vicky Rees at if you would like to get that set up.
