Affiliate profile: Hull Services

New Roads staff (L-R) Brandi Perron, Tania O'Neill, Jessica Peters and Amber Dawn Marshall pose alongside a photo of the Calgary skyline. Team member Tessa McGarrigle is missing from the photo.
Monique Verpoort, SNAP Project Leader, recently provided a five-day training session with long-time SNAP Affiliate, Hull Services (New Roads and staff from another program from Hull called Patch).

A SNAP licensed site since 2002, Hull offers both boys and girls programming to families in the Calgary area. Under the competent direction of SNAP Program Director Tessa McGarrigle, this organization consistently demonstrates high compliance to the integrity and fidelity of the SNAP model.  As staff turnover and change within teams are constant challenges for many affiliates, Tessa has expanded the SNAP training to employees working in various programs throughout her agency. As a result, Tessa has been able to develop a pool of staff to support the program while concurrently exploring other SNAP group delivery options for New Roads.
Given the consistent level of competency demonstrated during Hull’s involvement, we were pleased to have Tessa serve as co-leader during the most recent round of training. With strong supervision and leadership in place, Hull Services’ New Roads SNAP program continues to have very positive results and outcomes for Calgary’s children and their families.
If you would like to be featured as a SNAP Affiliate in a future newsletter, please let us know, and we would be happy to share your story.

SNAP in the media

Mr. Smith, a teacher with the Toronto District School Board, has great feedback about the SNAP program in his school. Check out his blog to learn more.
  • In December, the much-anticipated SNAP cost-benefit paper by renowned criminologists Drs. David Farrington and Christopher Koegl was published in The Journal of Quantitative Criminology. The study measured the monetary costs and benefits of the SNAP program to society. The researchers found that between $17 and $32 are saved for every $1 spent on SNAP. It was found that SNAP reduced crime by 33%, prevented 168 crimes per 100 boys, and saved $147,423 per boy. Though already a great savings, the authors concede that this amount is underestimated as it only takes into account criminal justice costs. The research concluded, "The monetary benefits of the SNAP program greatly exceed its monetary costs. It is desirable to invest in early prevention programs such as SNAP to reduce crime and save money."
  • Dr. Jennifer Bernier participated in an interview on News 957 about the SNAP Program delivered by BRAVE, a division of the Halifax Transition House Association (Bryony House).
  • Dr. Leena Augimeri was interviewed by WOW Living Radio talking about SNAP and children's mental health. Listen to the podcast here
