Bobby’s journey

“I buried some friends I was walking down the same dark path with and without SNAP® , I would have been buried right beside them a long time ago.”
–Bobby, former SNAP® Boys program participant and first SNAP
® leader in training (LIT)

Bobby remembers how quickly he spun out of control when he was a six-year-old student in Toronto. Life had been tough up for Bobby, who traces his Ojibway roots to northern Ontario. Raised by a single father who worked hard and drank hard, Bobby saw his mother only occasionally. At elementary school one day, Bobby decided he’d “had enough” of a boy who taunted and punched him. He asked the teacher for a new pencil, sharpened it, then quietly walked up to the bully and stabbed him in the shoulder.

Then, Bobby found SNAP®. Resistant at first, the staff’s patient, positive reinforcement paid off and he began to open up, and the program has had a significant impact on him.

“SNAP® was reinforced all the time…at camp, we were allowed to be just kids for eight hours and I can’t tell you how much that meant to me,” said Bobby.

Today Bobby is a husband and father of three children living in Red Deer and actively speaking about the value of the SNAP® program in Aboriginal communities. Bobby was recently an invited speaker at the All My Relations Gathering  presented by The Circle of Philanthropy and Aboriginal Peoples in Canada. His full story is part of the event’s accompanying book produced by the J.W. McConnell Family Foundation. Bobby was also recently featured in a CBC News article.
The Auberle team with their Agency of the Year Award.

Affiliate profile: SNAP® Affiliate wins prestigious award

Auberle, a Pittsburgh-based human services agency that delivers child and family services, including SNAP®, was recognized as the 2012 Agency of the Year by the Alliance for Children and Families. The Alliance for Children and Families benchmarks non-profit best practices across the country and is the largest network of human services organizations in the United States.

Auberle was selected for this prestigious award for their consistently high positive outcomes in programs across the agency, and for successfully launching 23 major projects in a single year that significantly improved services for the children and families they serve. One of these projects was the launch of the Girls’ Programming Initiative to address the disproportionate number of programming resources available for at-risk girls in the community compared to boys.

John Lydon, CEO of Auberle CEO says SNAP® played a big role in being selected for this award.

“This award is shared by everyone at SNAP® as well. The SNAP® Girls program is one of the reasons Auberle was recognized by the Alliance for Children and Families. This has been our best year in our 60-year history, and we would not have been able to achieve such success without your leadership and support,” said Lydon.

Congratulations to the Auberle team for their wonderful work with children, youth and families in Pittsburgh. You are truly deserving of this award.

SNAP® News: SNAP® Explosion underway!

As you may already know SNAP® was selected by the Pecaut Centre for Social Impact (PCSI) as their inaugural partner for social innovation in children’s mental health after a highly competitive selection process. We’re now embarking on a “SNAP® Explosion”, with the goal of making SNAP® available to more Canadian children and families from coast to coast.  Currently SNAP® reaches approximately 4,000 children though SNAP® Boys, SNAP® Girls and SNAP® for Schools.

Over the last year, the SNAP® Advisory Committee and CDI have been working closely with PCSI and their sector partners to develop a SNAP® Implementation Plan, with the goal of 140 SNAP® Affiliate sites, serving an additional 20,000 children, across Canada over the next five years.

The final Implementation Plan was approved by both the Pecaut Centre and CDI Boards of Directors in January 2014, and we’re now moving forward with creating new partnerships with both children’s mental health organizations and other not for profit service providers committed to improving the lives of children and families.

We will continue to support our existing SNAP® Affiliates and keep you informed about our progress. Thank you for your ongoing commitment to SNAP® and the children and families you serve.

Interest in SNAP® continues to grow
