Founded in 1981, the Buffalo Renaissance Foundation (BRF) is a non-profit, 501(c)3 organization dedicated to moving Buffalo forward, to help our future generations realize the best opportunities to enjoy a high quality of life in Western New York.

  Buffalo Renaissance Foundation        Summer 2015

DEAR FRIENDS, BENEFACTORS, SUPPORTERS AND FELLOW DRIECTORS, Since 1981, the Buffalo Renaissance Foundation and its directors have been driven by a passion to move our community forward.

2015 is already underway as evidenced by the sold-out Spring Luncheon at the historic Kleinhan's Music Hall, where we recognized Kim and Terry Pegula as our Renaissance Couple of the Year for their contributions to Buffalo with the purchase of the Bills and the unveiling of the beautiful HarborCenter down at Canalside.

Buffalo Bills coach Rex Ryan was part of our keynote panel that was moderated by former Bill Steve Tasker and included the Pegulas. The discussion was lively and entertaining for a crowd that exceeded 500 in the Mary Seaton Room.

Our third Sculptural Art Initiative, a joint effort with the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural Site, is nearing completion. A replica statue of Theodore Roosevelt will be unveiled in the fall and will join the Spirit of Life and Spirit of Transportation pieces as part of our BRF collection.

Our 33rd annual golf tournament is set for September 2 at Crag Burn Golf Club. The tournament, the second-oldest charity tournament in Western New York, will return to its roots where the first annual event was held in 1982.

This year's eighth annual Veterans Luncheon, an event that continues to grow and support our local veteran community, will be held once again in November and will honor our fifth scholarship recipient.

During our spring director retreat, we decided to suspend appropriations for the 2015 year to concentrate and accumulate funds related to a Forward Thinking Project that will have a greater impact on our community in the future. We look forward to disclosing our future plans when they are finalized.

Not many not-for-profit agencies can say that every dollar raised in their fund-raising events goes 100% to charity or is put into our endowment for future charitable giving. Our director dues fund 100% of our administrative costs and director expenses, so every dollar raised ends up in the hands of charities or organizations that meet our mission.

Thank you for your support in the past and into the future. Hopefully you will find our work inspirational, interesting, and fun, as well as something you will continue to be a part of. We have some new initiatives in the works that will focus on the current renaissance going on in Buffalo today. Together, we can continue to move Buffalo, forward.

Outreach Program provides helping hand to
the Miracle League

Thursday, July 16, several directors of the BRF and their children participated in a BRF Day at the Miracle League of Western New York. The Miracle League is a baseball diamond that allows physically and mentally challenged persons to play the game of baseball. The field, located on Grand Island, is made of rubber and the playground currently being assembled is handicap-accessible.

Serving as advocates for the group, the BRF directors and their children volunteered by pushing the participants in wheelchairs around the bases and protecting them from batted balls on defense.

BRF Spring Luncheon
Pegulas Honored as 2015 Renaissance Couple of the Year

Terry and Kim Pegula (Center), Recipients of the Renaissance Award, with Bill's Head Coach Rex Ryan (Left) and BRF President James Dentinger (Right)

The 2015 Spring Luncheon was held on June 12 at the Kleinhan's Music Hall in downtown Buffalo. The Buffalo Renaissance Foundation was proud to recognize the Pegulas with the annual Renaissance Award. The Renaissance Award represents annual recognition to the individual or couple that exemplifies outstanding community leadership and service to the Buffalo region, and the Pegulas surely met that criteria based on their generous contributions to the Western New York landscape.

The Pegulas were presented a crystal award designed and created by Buffalo's own Victor Trabucco, a tradition that has been maintained since our first luncheon in 1991. Examples of his work are currently on display in The American Glass Museum, The Chicago Art Institute, The Bergstrom Art Center, The Royal Ontario Museum, and The Corning Museum of Glass.

Thanks to our major sponsors: Platinum Sponsor—Pegula Sports and Entertaiment; Gold Sponsors—Allied Mechanical, Delaware North Companies, Harmac Medical Products, LPCiminelli, New Era Cap; Silver Sponsors—Dunn Tire, Employii, Hodgson Russ, Keller Technology, Lawley Insurance, McGuire Development, Uniland Development. An additional 29 Bronze Sponsors supported this year's luncheon, making it our most successful luncheon since inception. Special thanks to Msgr. J. Patrick Keleher for presenting the Invocation.

keynote speaker Rex Ryan, Head Coach for the Buffalo Bills

Keynote speaker Rex Ryan participated in a coffee table panel with the Pegulas moderated by former Bill and current CBS reporter Steve Tasker. On January 12, 2015, Rex was named the 18th head coach in franchise history. He enters his first season as Buffalo’s head coach and his 19th season in the NFL. The new head coach was eloquent and vibrant in speaking about this year’s team and the hope to break the 14-year playoff drought.

Proceeds from the luncheon benefit the BRF Forward Thinking Project, currently in the works as an impactful project that will be focused on the foundation’s mission.

Sculptural Art Initiative Update

The 7’ 6” statue of Theodore Roosevelt, the third in our five-part Spirit of Buffalo series, has been sent to the foundry for casting and is nearing completion. The statue is scheduled for installation this the fall and will make its home on the grounds of the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site on Delaware Avenue. The statue will be a fitting tribute to the legacy of Theodore Roosevelt and a crowning touch to the great work that has taken place at one of Western New York’s best museums.
