Join us February 6 for the region's coolest tradition: the Ice Harvest Festival at Hanford Mills Museum. A great cure for cabin fever, the Ice Harvest Festival offers hands-on history and winter fun.

Up until the early 1900s,  ice was cut from ponds and rivers and then stored until it was needed to keep food and agricultural products cold in the warmer months. Hanford Mills Museum lets visitors take part in a traditional ice harvest on the frozen mill pond.
Watch this short video of last year's Ice Harvest Festival, then join us for this year's Ice Harvest on February 6.
“There is a great spirit of community as everyone works together harvesting ice, and then warms up with delicious soup,” says Museum executive director Liz Callahan. Area restaurants provide soup for the hot soup buffet. The harvested ice will be used to make ice cream at the Museum's Independence Day Celebration.
In addition to harvesting ice, you can:
  • watch the SUNY Delhi Hospitality Center Ice Team create sculptures from blocks of ice
  • try out ice fishing with the help of volunteers from the Dave Brandt Chapter of Trout Unlimited
  • take a horse-drawn sleigh ride around the Museum site
  • see blacksmithing demonstrations
  • shop from local farmers and businesses, including  Promisedland Farms (Catharina's wonderful wool mittens and hats), Byebrook Farm (cheese), Cooperstown Distillery, Larry’s Custom Meats, the Ate.o.Ate Food Truck, and Cabana Coffee. The Museum Shop also will be open.
  • choose your favorite soup at the hot soup buffet
  • make a snowman in the snowman village
  • warm up by fire pits
  • watch films of ice harvests in the 1920s-1940s
  • play tabletop games and see historic cooking demonstrations in the Hanford House.
The Ice Harvest Festival is sponsored by the SUNY Delhi Hospitality Management Department, Five Star Subaru, and WSKG.
