Steam Power 101

This in-depth course, taught by Joe Michaels who designed and helped build the Museum's Steam Power Plant, provides a working understanding of basic steam plant operation, which can be applied to other mill (or stationary) settings, as well as marine and mobile applications. Beginners welcome, no technical expertise required. Steam Power 101 will be held Saturday, August 15, 9 am - 5 pm and Sunday, August 16, 9 am - noon. Register by August 12

Free Family Saturday

August 15 is the final Free Family Saturday of the season. We'll be running the steam power plant, so you can see steam as well as water-power demonstrations. Up to two adults will be admitted free of charge when accompanied by a child (preschool through high school.) Students aged 13-18 will be admitted free of charge as well. Children 12 and under always receive free admission to the Museum. Funding for Free Family Saturdays comes in part from a grant from Stewart’s Holiday Match.

Weekly Themes

Plan your next visit to Hanford Mills Museum. Each week we have a different theme to connect visitors with the Mill, its community and its history.
  •  July 29-August 2: East Meredith Businesses
Learn about some local business owners, and the roles that they played in East Meredith while Hanford Mills was in operation.
  • August 5-9: Technology
Join us as we celebrate the wide variety of technology that has been used at the Mill. From woodworking and milling equipment to power generation machinery, the Mill’s owners and workers used different types of technology, and took advantage of local inventions and innovations.
  • August 12-16: Modern Alternative Energy
Hanford Mills Museum provides great examples of historic power generation and takes advantage of a major renewable resource: water. This week we’ll highlight the connections between our historic power sources and modern alternative energy options, including solar, water, and wind.
