SASS Continues to Fight Breast Cancer in Licking County

4/12/16 LICKING COUNTY, OHIO – The Licking County Health Department is pleased to announce the Screening And Survivor Support (SASS) for Breast Cancer program has received a community grant from Susan G. Komen Columbus®. SASS is one of 22 programs to receive funding from Komen Columbus this year.

The community grant funding will allow SASS to continue to provide breast health education, free mammograms, and further diagnostic screenings for women in Licking and contiguous counties. Women receiving SASS screening assistance must be under or uninsured and over 40 years of age, unless history of breast cancer or medical need exists. SASS also provides financial assistance and social support for women diagnosed with breast cancer in Licking County.

“Women who are diagnosed with breast cancer in Ohio are more likely to die from the disease than almost anywhere else in the United States due to multiple barriers such as access to affordable care and treatment and challenges to navigating the healthcare systems,” said Julie McMahon, Director of Mission at Komen Columbus. “In the communities we serve, we have identified issues contributing to those problems and focused our support to organizations that bring local solutions to those barriers.”

It is recommended that women over 40 discuss their risk of breast cancer with their doctor and keep up with yearly or regular mammogram screenings. To help make completing mammograms more convenient, SASS will be bringing mobile mammogram units to outlying communities around Licking County. Mobile units are scheduled for the following dates and locations:

Pataskala: Friday, June 24, 2016
Johnstown: Friday, November 4, 2016
Utica: Wednesday, March 29, 2017

Mobile mammogram units are open to the public and encouraged for women with health insurance and for those lacking coverage. Payment assistance may be available for women in need. Women interested in scheduling a mammogram at any of the above locations can contact SASS at (740) 349-6535 (option 5).

In addition to the mobile mammogram units, SASS will continue to assist with mammograms for under or uninsured women throughout the year. Women in need of assistance with a mammogram, or women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer, may be able to receive help from SASS. Please contact SASS at (740) 349-6535 option 5, SASS@lickingcohealth.org or visit www.lcsass.org for more information.
