While volumes are up in the solar industry, prices are down... 
which means the industry’s total revenue is stagnant. 
BUT ... there’s more competition than ever. 
Solar retailers are faced with working ever-harder to secure a slice of decreasing revenues.

So, I wasn't surprised when two out of three solar businesses interviewed by Nigel Morris said: Key to their business success this year is using customer service to build reputation and generate referrals. 
That’s because whereas with regular leads you're automatically competing on price against two other companies, referrals instead deliver easy-to-convert sales without competition.
Great customer service can also generate great reviews. And most people are using Google reviews when choosing their solar company. 
The challenge is: great customer service costs money.
In the words of Troy Ryan of the Solar Depot (a leading solar business and one of Nigel's interviewees): "People are expensive and you gotta use their time wisely." 
Mark Moody of SolarWorx said key to business success in the next year was to "not waste money on staff". Both said you need to be super-efficient with admin and use IT really well. 
"You're talking about operational efficiency... It really does make a difference"
