Greetings Editors,

I am very sorry to have to tell you that due to unforeseen circumstances I have had to resign from the ASE Presidency for the rest of this year.

Deborah Peart ASE, our Vice President, will take over for me and I know you are in truly great hands.  

Our guild is growing in strength and numbers and I firmly believe that we as film practitioners and facilitators are involved in creating film, television and multimedia that stands up on a world stage.  Case in point, a huge congratulations to all editors and post production personnel involved in Mad Max: Fury Road.


I would like to thank the Executive Committee, the State Chairs, our Sponsors and Margaret Slarke
for all of your unwavering support over the past year and a half.


I have loved being your President and I think the guild is in a very strong state at this time.

I would like to announce that we have added two NEW awards for 2015 and as a result have merged two awards. 

The Documentary Programme Award and the Documentary Series Award will merge into a category named Documentary Short Form and we would like to introduce two NEW awards for —

Television Current Affairs and Reality Television

I would also like to put out an impassioned call for for mentors in all states.

State Updates

VICTORIA

It has been another busy start to the year for the Victorian section of the ASE. We recently hosted a number of events at the St. Kilda Film Festival including an editors panel and seminar and ran a highly successful business lecture in April.

We take things to a new level in June with a major event. The ASE returns to Backlot Studios on Sunday June 21 at 2pm as one of the best editors in Australian cinema, Ken Sallows ASE, joins us for a full screening and Q & A of Chopper, the film that made Eric Bana famous and Chopper Read infamous around the world.

Ken is joined by the film's additional editor Steve Evans in an event not to be missed. FREE to members of the ASE, $5 for other guilds and $10 to the general public.

Don't miss it:­ Sunday June 21 at 2pm, Backlot Studios 65 Haig Street, Southbank.

And that is just a taste of what the Victorian Committee has to offer in 2015.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA

Touch, a south Australian film edited by David Banbury, has just completed its run of 'Screening and Q&A sessions' around Oz. It is now in select cinemas so get out and see it. www.touchthemovie.com.au is a great way to check which cinemas close to you are showing the film and you can also check out the trailer there.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA

The WA branch of the ASE held a sundowner at the PICA bar in Perth’s cultural precinct of Northbridge on Saturday May 2nd. This was an open invitation, not only to ASE members, but the general post-production community.

Plans are in place to hold a Premiere Pro familiarisation workshop in June for Avid editors interested in expanding their skill-set. Central TAFE is making their Mac lab available for the event in exchange for a few free places for some of their enthusiastic media students.

Join the campaign to protect local jobs and local stories.

The Abbott Government is proposing to scrap the visa rules which regulate the number of foreign performers and crew who can work temporarily in Australia. 

Scrapping the visa controls would mean productions will have unfettered ability to fill all lead and major supporting roles with overseas performers and import entire teams of production crew.

The government says it is “removing red tape”. Labor, the Greens and several cross bench Senators have publicly opposed the Government’s plans, saying local actors and crew would suffer. 

The changes are still being considered by the Government.

Your industry needs your support to fight these changes. Current and future generations of performers and crew are depending on you.

Adequate Arts Funding Free from Political Interference: Australians for Artistic Freedom

In the wake of the federal budget more than 9,000 people have signed a petition (http://bit.ly/1A5pdy8) calling for adequate arts funding, free from political interference. You can sign it too by going to the above link. Add your name to a very impressive list of artists and filmmakers.  

Leading Australian artists and public figures including Neil Armfield, Christos Tsiolkas, Julian Burnside QC, Robert Manne and many more have condemned the Abbott Government’s decision to take more than $100M off the Australia Council and hand control of those funds to its own arts ministry.

Meet The Member: Belinda Felix

Hello everyone! My name is Belinda and I’m a television assistant editor with a big passion for the craft of storytelling. After graduating from AFTRS and working on a documentary series, I started as an assistant at Channel Seven and have had the great opportunity to manage the footage of several different shows since then. Currently I’m working for the Factual Department at Seven and am in charge of handling all the footage for more than 2 shows at a time – and whenever I get the chance I also cut stories or sizzles as my ultimate goal is to become an editor.
 
I knew I wanted to work in post when… I started sneaking out of my afternoon classes in high school to go to my older brother’s film school in Lisbon – he was studying cinematography at the time and I just loved to watch the editors from a glass window in the corridor. Eventually I was told very politely that I couldn't be there because I wasn't a student…
 
My first break in the industry was… when I edited my first couple of shorts back in Lisbon. Here in Sydney was when one of my teachers at AFTRS asked me to assist on a documentary series.
 
The thing I love most about editing is… being the first or even the only person that has the closest perspective to an audience. Even though the project happens as a result of a collaborative effort - it’s the picture cut that determines the story ultimately and there is nothing better than trying to figure out ways to 'manipulate' the audience to make them feel exactly what you want them to feel.
 
The best tip I’ve got for aspiring editors is… I consider myself an aspiring editor – but probably one of the best pieces of advice I’ve been given was to take advantage of the knowledge of the actual editors on the project - ask questions (at appropriate times, of course), watch their work and try to understand why they made certain decisions in the cut. Unfortunately nowadays being an assistant editor means spending less time with the editor and more time data wrangling – so it’s important seek those opportunities.

If I weren’t in post production I’d be… I honestly don’t imagine myself doing anything else – but if I absolutely had to leave post – I would still like to be in some way involved with the visual aspect of the picture – so probably cinematography.

 

Meet The Committee: Simon Smith (QLD)

Simon Harvey Smith has been working in post production for over 15 years. As a Director/DP Simon primarily does post on his own projects and has come to specialise in Music Videos and Commercials, completing hundreds over his career. Some of his recent work includes Music Videos for The Amity Affliction, Dead letter Circus and Brian McFadden, and Commercial Work for such brands as Yamaha, Toyota and Brisbane Broncos.

I knew I wanted to work in post when…I discovered that for all the challenges of creating an engaging script and the excitement of getting great performances and shots on set, the edit was where the film is really made.

My first break in the industry was… Sound editing on Flipper. I was lucky enough to get a gig straight out of university for the post sound house 'DSV' at Warner Brothers Movie Studios. I had to edit all the splash/water fx for the foreign language dubbed version of the series. I was then later promoted to foley recordist/editor. I learnt so much at that job, and to this day I really appreciate my time there.
 
The thing I love most about editing is… When you get totally in "The Zone" and are able to go on autopilot and engage intuitively with the material. 
 
The best tip I’ve got for aspiring editors is… Be easy to work with. Other than that, Practice Practice Practice and make your keyboard shortcuts second nature. Live it. Watch a ton of stuff and try and figure out how it was put together and why it works or doesn't. Absorb it all into your subconscious, because when you're in an edit you want to make your decisions fast and instinctually. You want to be able to just "know" what's going to work without thinking too much about it. 
 
If I weren’t in post production I’d be… A much weaker filmmaker.
 
I was inspired to join the ASE committee… In QLD we have a very strong ACS branch which creates a great, supporting community and puts on lots of events that really helped as a cinematographer. I wanted to be a part of building up something similar with the ASE, which is only really just getting going up here.

The ASE is important… Because an organisation which fosters interaction between people who share the same craft is essential to strengthening the industry. It improves best practices and ensures this continues into future generations of editors.

Donald Halliday (known credits 1944-1963)

Was the first Disney feature animation editors. The early Disney animated features have no editor credited. Donald Halliday received the first editing credit for the live action sequences in The Three Caballeros (1948). He then edited all but one of the subsequent Disney features, starting from Cinderella in 1950 to Peter Pan, Lady and  the Tramp, Sleeping Beauty, 101 Dalmatians and finally The Sword in the Stone in 1963.
