Why The Trend For River Ships?

Corporate clients are looking to charter river ships more than ever.  Why this trend?  It seems (at times) clients have an easier time selling river ship charters to their management than other products and here are a few reasons why:
  • There are no regulations on embarking or disembarking a river ship mid-cruise.  This makes it easy for VIPs, CEOs, guest speakers or entertainers to shorten their stay onboard.
  • While on a river cruise, you can generally see land at all times and there is little motion onboard, making such voyages particularly appealing to those who have been hesitant to book more traditional cruise products.
  • There is no letter of credit requirement when chartering a river ship and contracts are simple to negotiate and execute.
  • Because of their size (129-184 passengers), smaller VIP groups can have total exclusivity at an affordable price.
  • River ships include shore excursions, giving passengers an opportunity to visit each port of call without additional cost.
  • Chartering a river ship is less expensive than booking like-quality hotels in Europe, and passengers experience up to FOUR countries in a one-week cruise.
  • A river cruise experience is easier to facilitate than its land counterpart requiring less staff and associated expenses.

I have talked about European river cruises being one of the latest trends in the incentive industry.  From the Seine (visiting Paris, Normandy and the WW II landing beaches) to the Rhine (covering four countries in seven days) to the Danube (exploring majestic Vienna and Budapest) and on to the Rhone (exploring Provence, the chateaux region and the gorgeous French countryside) – it is no wonder these cruises have gained significantly in popularity.

It is astounding the number of cruise lines entering the adventure market - specifically cruises to Antarctica, which take place for  a few winter months.  The balance of the year, these products sail in other distant waters and on shorter (incentive-friendly) voyages.  Crystal Endeavor, Scenic Eclipse (both with capacity for 200 guests) and the four new 184-passenger Ponant vessels can be chartered in domains such as Asia, South America and Europe.  Currently, Ponant is running a charter promo on their new ships offering a 30 percent break on buy out rates on these products.  Pre-delivery pricing can be quite advantageous!

Often visited by cruise passengers during Fall Foliage season, this is the oldest American National Park east of the Mississippi River.  The park is home to glacial mountain ridges that look like ice cream cones from a distance.  There are over 120 miles of hiking trails, some with frighteningly steep drop offs.  Small mammals that visitors may see include beavers, otters and porcupines. Large mammals range from whitetail deer to humpback whales.
