The Schrödinger Inquiry
by Gregg Chamberlain

Helmut Schmidt frowned in a government-approved manner. He tapped a government-approved pencil on the official government-approved animal licensing form in front of him.

“This is a very simple question, Herr Schrödinger. I fail to see the problem in your giving me a simple yes-or-no answer.”

Erwin Schrödinger smiled and shrugged his shoulders in apology. Schmidt sighed in a government-approved manner. “Let us start over.”

He glanced at the form. “Is your name Erwin Schrödinger?”

“Yes.”

“You live at Huttenstrasse 9, Zurich?”

“Yes.”

“And do you or do you not have a cat?”

“Yes,” Schrödinger replied, smiling.

Schmidt smiled in response, ticking the appropriate box on the form in a government-approved manner.

“No,” Schrödinger replied, smiling.

Schmidt shrugged in response, ticking the appropriate box on the form in a government-approved manner.

“Maybe,” Schrödinger replied, smiling.

Schmidt sighed in response, tapping his pencil on the form in a government-approved manner.

“I’m not sure,” Schrödinger replied, smiling.

Schmidt stared in response, pencil tip scratching a hole in the form in a government-approved manner.

“I don’t know,” Schrödinger replied, smiling.

Schmidt screamed in response, pencil dropping onto the form, as he strangled Schrödinger in a government-approved manner.

Gregg Chamberlain lives in rural Ontario, Canada, with his missus, Anne, and their two cats, about whose existence there is NO doubt.
