Time just marches on, huh?

As the first word in our title suggests, we get that the passage of time can stir up some...angst. That's why we're making something special as we cross this threshold into a new decade together.

In last week's episode, you heard writer Saeed Jones talking about how his mother taught him to start a new year: not with resolutions, but with determinations. Saeed wrote a new essay about that, and thanks to the magic of computers and Death, Sex & Money sound designer Andrew Dunn, we made it into something you can take in with your eyes closed.

Please enjoy. And as you think about a determination you want to start your year with, please tell us! Record a voice memo and send it to us. There are already some below, and we'll share more of what we hear from you as they come in.

Have a great start to 2020.

This Week on Death, Sex & Money
Instead of coming up with New Year's resolutions, writer Saeed Jones's mother, Carol Sweet-Jones, taught him to write determinations. He recently wrote a new essay about that process called “We Are a Determined Household,” which you can hear him read in your feeds now.

In our new episode, Saeed also shares some advice on how to set your own determinations. And we'd love to hear what you come up with! Record a voice memo of your 2020 determination(s) and send it to us at
Your Stories: Determinations
The determinations are already rolling in on Saeed's Substack, where he published his essay. These are a few of our favorites:
"I will get a full-time job that aligns my skills with my values. No job is perfect, and there will be bad days, but I will aim for the stability that I’ve been missing." -Ilana
"I will start hormone replacement therapy. I will speak up for myself."
"I will be out of bed at a regular time consistently to start my day without rushing, and carry that confidence into the world." -Jonesey
"I will part my hair along the cowlick, where my hair naturally WANTS to part, rather than combing to cover up my cowlick as I have done for the last 30 years! I will learn how to make better salads!" -Hallie
"I will hike at least once a week, all year!" -Erin
"Heart in my throat and tears in my eyes as I write, but I will hire a vocal coach and find places to sing. I will do my best to overcome my stage fright." -Kathryn
"I will create an identity for myself separate from being a mom. My kids are two and eight months and so it's been all consuming but I don't want to be in the habit of pushing myself aside. I will edit the first draft of my novel, do yoga, read, get back to baking and not feel guilty about it!"
"I will see new-to-me bodies of water in new-to-me places!" -Dee
"I will listen to, prioritize, and take care of my mind, body, and spirit. I will say 'no' to the things that prevent me from nourishing my mind, body, and spirit." -Charly
Happy New Year!
