H.I.Mentors NewsWatch, June 2014

From Darice’s Desk:

Summer is almost here, and I think most of us are glad for the warmer weather. Despite the rollback of ICD-10-CM/PCS for another year, there is still work to do implementing new projects and applications. Transitioning to an EHR, CAC or other new, advanced technology, requires an understanding of EHR clinical documentation and forms, coding productivity, revenue cycle requirements and how they affect your workflow processes.
An independent assessment of key patient data elements and performance indicators, plus efficient management of your systems and processes can help your organization eliminate headaches and streamline the successful transition to an EHR/CAC or other solution.
I have numerous speaking engagements this year across the country and I hope you can join me and give us a chance to catch up. I am also excited to announce my brand new book that will be published by AHIMA in September-entitled, “Strategies for Electronic Documents and Health Record Management.” Copies will be available at the 86th AHIMA Convention in San Diego this fall and through the H.I.Mentors website at, as soon as it’s available.
Enjoy a safe, fun and relaxing summer!
Darice Gryzybowski, MA, RHIA, FAHIMA, AHIMA Academy Approved ICD-10 CM/PCS Trainer,
President, H.I.Mentors LLC

What’s New in our Quick Tips Section?

5 Tips for strengthening your infrastructure to support advanced technologies within the HIM department:

  1. Invest in a detailed document/forms inventory and process review for all related departments as part of your planning process for a new EHR/CAC solution.
  2. Implement an ongoing quality review program to help ensure documentation clarity, conciseness, concurrency and completeness.
  3. Have an external company conduct a dual ICD-9 and ICD-10 audit of your documentation and coding. This will help identify where the gaps are in the documentation process and pinpoint how to best educate your medical staff and coders.
  4. Review your vacation and peak work period staffing schedule. When possible, develop a plan to provide adequate coverage before potential staffing shortages take their toll on productivity.
  5. Update your Legal Health Record (LHR) definition and ensure you have a comprehensive solution in place to support document and data integrity as part of your electronic document management system.
