H.I.Mentors Newsletter, Volume 3 - October 2013

From Darice’s Desk:

Autumn greetings from H.I.Mentors! October is here and just as the brisk wind sends the leaves whirling, the fall season brings new state and federal legislative changes.  As if the implementation of the Accountable Care Act wasn’t enough: one year from now, if all goes as planned, ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS will become the new reality for everyone working in healthcare.

This means a renewed focus on best practices in clinical documentation, an increased need for proactive coding education, audits and stress management tips for your staff!  Keeping your eye on top priorities should be the goal and you might want to consider some of these tips to add to your ‘to do’ list:

Darice Gryzybowski, MA, RHIA, FAHIMA, President H.I.Mentors LLC

PSIf your are attending AHIMA in Atlanta, please be sure to stop by the H.I.Mentors Booth #840 and say hello!

What’s New in our Quick Tips section?

Five Tips to support the ICD-10 transition process

  1. Utilize physician liaisons who understand the importance of complying with coding guidelines as hospitals have a legal and ethical obligation to ensure that they help physicians produce compliant documentation.
  2. Provide education to the medical staff focused on “what’s in it for them”—e.g., using accurate documentation language that complies with coding guidelines to assure that expected LOS and morbidity are supported by the documentation.
  3. Help physicians understand that accurate documentation supports their public profiling will represent individual caseload and outcomes at a proper severity/acuity level.
  4. Use audits to monitor improvements and provide statistical feedback to the medical staff by comparing physician and department documentation patterns and query response rates.
  5. Consider engaging an HIM-based CDI consultant who can help the Clinical Documentation Specialist (CDS) staff become the translator between the language of medicine and the language of coding, which is what the process of querying helps to identify through the documentation improvement process.
