New project combines smart textiles with cutting edge technology to improve usability for prosthetic limb users

Li Guo, Smart Textiles researcher
Project meeting
Many of the users of prosthetic limb suffer from ill-fitting prosthetic sockets and from phantom limb pain. Many times using of prosthetic socks can reduce discomfort for someone with a prosthetic limb. As no two residual limbs are exactly the same, a mass-produced sock won´t fit everyone. The MedTech West associated researcher Li Guo from Smart Textiles at the University of Borås has received a grant from The Knowledge Foundation for investigating textile methods to address these problems. The two-year project aim to develop smart textile solutions to improve user comfort by developing a method to manufacture personalized prosthetic socks.

– If the prosthesis is uncomfortable, the person won´t wear it, says Li Guo. Smart textiles enable the design and production of a functional textile interface between the residual limb and the socket of the prosthetic device to improve wearability and comfort.
Max Ortiz Catalan from Integrum AB
Project meeting
- Both from a MedTech West and a personal point of view, this is very inspiring as this project continues the long tradition in outstanding prosthetic research collaborations that started between Sahlgrenska University Hospital and Chalmers in the late sixties. Personally, I caught my first glimpse of natural control of artificial limbs at the Department of Applied Electronics during my first week as a Chalmers student in September 1976, This made such an impression on me, that I decided to pursue a career in biomedical engineering, says Leif Sandsjö, researcher at MedTech West and the university of Borås. Forty years later the team at the University of Borås can add to this strong line of research by contributing textile technology solutions addressing problems encountered in everyday use of today’s prostheses.

The project will combine cutting edge technology of smart textiles at the University of Borås and the knowledge of three industrial partners: Integrum AB, Bola AB and Lindhe Xtend AB.
The Knowledge Foundation is the research financier for universities with the task of strengthening Sweden's competitiveness and ability to create value. The Foundation supports research that is conducted at Sweden's new universities, provided that industry provides a matching amount and actively participates in order to achieve development there as well.

A MedTech West lunchseminar with Oliver Aalami, Associate Professor of Surgery at Stanford University
Oliver Aalami

The Biodesign Approach to medtech innovation in vascular surgery

At this MedTech West lunch seminar we will be visited by Dr. Oliver Aalami, Associate Professor of Surgery in the Division of  Vascular & Endovascular Surgery at Stanford University and the Palo Alto VA Healthcare System.

Dr. Oliver Aalami´s main areas of research are in health information technology as well as device development. He recently completed his Biodesign faculty fellowship as well as the AMIA 10x10 health informatics certification. Dr. Aalami recently launched an Apple ResearchKit App Study for patients with Peripheral Artery Disease, called VascTrac, to evaluate patient activity tracking as a new patient surveillance strategy- a form of precision medicine. He completed his General Surgery residency at UCSF-East Bay and his Vascular Surgery Fellowship at Northwestern University in Chicago.

The seminar will be introduced by Mårten Falkenberg, docent at the Sahlgrenska Academy and vascular surgeon at the Sahlgrenska University Hospital, and Torbjörn Lundh, professor in mathematical sciences at Chalmers University of Technology.

Associated researchers

Darko Sarovic
Darko Sarovic is a medical doctor who studied at the University of Belgrade. He works part time at the clinic of child and adolescent psychiatry in Borås, and is since 2016 a full time PhD student at the Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology, Gillberg Centre.

Darko´s PhD thesis will be based on the project ”Neurophysiological markers of autism” which uses the state-of-the-art neuroimaging method magnetoencephalography (MEG). The aim of the project is to find useful biomarkers that can aid in diagnostics, hopefully allowing for diagnosis before behavioral symptoms become apparent, as well as to find eventual endophenotypes that can be used to evaluate the effects of pharmacologic and therapeutic treatment.

In addition to his academic career, he is a self-trained professional sprinter who has competed for national teams at the European level and holds a national record in the 100 m. Besides his general interest in the neurosciences, he is also interested in sports science.

Welcome to MedTech West, Darko Sarovic!
