MedTech West funding for prehospital diagnostics for traumatic thoracic injuries project

Stefan and Rubén, 2016

The Steering Committee of MedTech West recently made the decision to offer financial support to research projects that are related to the two centres MedTech West and Prehospital ICT Arena (PICTA) at Lindholmen Science Park, and thereby stimulate increased collaboration between them. The projects should involve innovative biomedical engineering solutions addressing the field of prehospital care, and where ICT is of major importance for a successful implementation into healthcare practice. The applicants, or constellation of applicants, should be associated and have relations with both centres. The first project to receive funding from MedTech West is Stefan Candefjord´s and Rubén Buendía´s project “Prehospital Diagnostics for Traumatic Thoracic Injuries”.

Symposium on radiation therapy and the brain at MedTech West

Rolf Heckemann
Lina Bunketorp-Käll
On 15 September 2016, MedTech West hosted a symposium and kick-off meeting on radiation effects on the brain. A multitude of key members with expertise in methods for studying the issue got together and shared their views. With six lectures and a series of in-depth discussions, we got to know about each others’ expertise and views. The participants agreed that radiation effects on the brain are a hot research topic, and that the time is right to coordinate our endeavours.

FLU-ID – Bioassays for fast and sensitive detection of pandemic influenza using ultra-sensitive magnetometry and wiggling nanomagnets

Pandemic influenza poses a threat unlike any other public health emergency or natural disaster, especially in terms of its complexity, distribution and ability to devastate society on a global scale. In order to limit the health related, as well as economic, consequences, rapid, sensitive, and specific diagnostic assays are important. Established testing procedures take from 3-10 days (viral cell cultures) to <30 min (immunechromato-graphic lateral flow and membrane-based immunoassays). However, all currently recommended tests are performed in dedicated bioanalytical laboratories. Furthermore, assay instrumentation is typically large and rather expensive, and not available at the point of care or in smaller emergency wards. A reliable assay with a short turn-around-time for detecting influenza-infections in respiratory samples is highly desirable.

The methods and instruments developed in the FLU-ID project focus on influenza, but are generic. Many relevant microorganisms, for example staphylococci (MRSA), require a similar diagnostic approach.

Oliver Aalami

The Biodesign Approach to medtech innovation in vascular surgery

At this MedTech West lunch seminar we will be visited by Dr. Oliver Aalami, Associate Professor of Surgery in the Division of  Vascular & Endovascular Surgery at Stanford University and the Palo Alto VA Healthcare System. Aalami´s main areas of research are in health information technology as well as device development, and he recently launched an Apple ResearchKit App Study for patients with Peripheral Artery Disease, called VascTrac, to evaluate patient activity tracking as a new patient surveillance strategy- a form of precision medicine. Participants registered before 13:00 pm. on 24 Nov. 2016 are served a light lunch.

World’s first implanted bionic arm on test in global competition

A few years ago, a patient was implanted with a bionic arm for the first time in the world using control technology developed at Chalmers University of Technology. Magnus is now taking part in Cybathlon, a new international competition in which 74 participants with physical disabilities will compete against each other, using the latest robotic prostheses and other assistive technologies. Magnus is the only participant with an amputation above the elbow, which makes the competition more difficult.

- From a competitive perspective this contest is far from ideal to demonstrate clinically viable technology, says Max Ortiz Catalan, in charge of developing the technology in close collaboration with Dr Rickard Brånemark, who performed the implantation. But it is an important event in the human-machine interface field in which we would like to showcase our technology. Unlike several of the other participants, Magnus will compete in the event using the same technology he uses in his everyday life.
