Bjorn Lomborg, President of the Copenhagen Consensus Center, today expressed enthusiasm for the attention and financial resources devoted to malnutrition by NGOs, companies and world leaders at today’s Nutrition for Growth Summit in London.
“Today’s events in London underscore the importance of leveraging our scarce resources to do the most good," said Dr. Lomborg. "Investing in eliminating malnutrition is not only the moral thing to do. As the Copenhagen Consensus has shown, it is also one of the very best investments to make in the future. I am delighted that many have committed resources, like InterAction* committing $750 million, on the basis of the top ranking of nutrition by the Copenhagen Consensus."
He continued, "By enabling millions of children to escape physical and cognitive stunting, smart nutrition interventions will benefit children throughout their entire lives. Research by the Copenhagen Consensus shows that nutrition interventions make them mentally and physically better developed and increase their productivity in adulthood 200 percent. This virtuous cycle of development will create benefits of 59 pounds** for every extra pound spent --- a phenomenal return. Moreover, scientific initiatives to boost agricultural productivity will benefit people through less hunger and the planet through less forest cut-down – a win-win situation.”
ENDS.
