Utah Campus Compact Celebrates 20 Years this Friday

Please join us this Friday, February 19th in the Utah State Capitol, Hall of Governors at 11 am to celebrate 20 years of Utah Campus Compact.  Featured speakers include Senator Ann Milner and President David Pershing as well as Student Advisory Council members, Becca Huppi and Hannah Pendergast, and AmeriCorps Member, Rob Unzaga.  Utah Campus Compact Member Presidents will also participate in a signing of the 30th Anniversary Campus Compact Action Statement.  Please RSVP here if you have not already done so.

Utah Campus Compact Request for Additional Legislative Funds Clears First Hurdle

Many thanks to Senator Ann Milner for sponsoring a $30,000 request for additional on-going legislative funds to support the staffing of Utah Campus Compact.  At the close of the Higher Education Appropriations Subcommittee last Friday, the request was included in the prioritized list the Subcommittee forwarded to the Executive Appropriations Committee.  Feel free to contact any Legislators on that Committee, this week, to lend your support to our request.
Snow College and University of Utah welcome new Community Engagement Administrators

Utah Campus Compact is pleased to welcome Mitch Jenkins and BobbiJo Kanter into our network of professionals.

Mitch Jenkins enters the part-time role of Service and Community-Oriented Learning Coordinator with years of previous service at Snow College as an instructor and advisor.  He will work with the Service-Learning Faculty Committee as well as other community-oriented initiatives.  Mitch’s knowledge of the Ephraim and Snow College communities are great assets that have already begun yielding results that will build the capacity of the college to serve community needs.

BobbiJo Kanter joins the Bennion Center as the Associate Director for Student Programs with more than a decade of executive management experience, having served most recently as the director of program services for Special Olympics Utah. In that role, she has served as a community partner with Bennion Center students and understands the nuances, benefits, and challenges of community engagement programming.   BobbiJo received a bachelor's degrees in both history and psychology from Hastings College and a master’s degree in history from the University of Alabama.
Utah Campus Compact Website Issues Continue
After spending a few weeks attempting to salvage the Utah Campus Compact website it has become clear that the attack was so extensive we will need to completely rebuild our site.  We will maintain a static page at while we migrate to a microsite with National Campus Compact over the next couple of months.  Updated information and materials will be posted to the Utah Campus Compact Facebook page and Twitter feed.  Thank you for your patience!

California Campus Compact and Campus Compact of the Mountain West staff have pulled together content and facilitators that highlight innovations and deep thinking in strategic priority areas for the Campus Compact network and specific programs and initiatives that are making waves at member institutions. High-Impact STEM Education Conference
June 9-10, 2016 | Denver, CO

SENCER, the Science Education for New Civic Engagements and Responsibilities, and Campus Compact of the Mountain West are partnering with the Center for Community Engagement and Service-Learning at the University of Denver to host a conference focused on advancing STEM education through high-impact practices (e.g. undergraduate research and community engagement) connected to compelling civic issues. In addition, the conference will explore indigenous science and ways of knowing through all of the tracks. We welcome faculty from across the disciplines to engage in discussions throughout the conference on the intersections of undergraduate research, STEM-focused community engagement, sustainability across the disciplines, and STEM partnerships in the liberal arts. Track 1- Undergraduate Research through the STEM Curriculum. Track 2- Models for STEM-focused Community Engagement. Track 3- Sustainability: Responsibility & Engagement Across All Disciplines. 30th Anniversary: A Summit of Campus Compact Member Presidents and Chancellors
March 21 - 23, 2016 | Boston, MA

Campus Compact has organized a summit for Presidents and Chancellors in connection with the 30th Anniversary Conference. At the summit, presidents and chancellors will affirm an Action Statement announcing a set of commitments to apply the principles articulated in the Presidents' Declaration on the Civic Responsibility of Higher Education. In the year leading up to the summit, Campus Compact state and regional affiliates and the national office will work with leaders of member institutions to articulate specific actions to which we commit ourselves. Interfaith Youth Core Webinars for Student Life Professionals

IFYC will begin an ongoing professional development opportunity or campus professionals in Student Affairs, Religious and Spiritual Life, and other areas of student life. This four-part webinar series offers practical tips and examples of excellent interfaith work on college campuses nationwide.

Part 1: Foundational Knowledge and Literacy. February 23, 2016

  • This webinar covers basic religious literacy, as well as theoretical foundations for interfaith cooperation and a brief history of interfaith cooperation in the USA.

Part 2: Building Interfaith Relationships. March 29, 2016

  • We’ll explore approaches to relationship building across lines of religious difference, leaning heavily on the direct service and community organizing strategies of past and present-day interfaith leaders.

Part 3: Designing Interfaith Programs. April 19, 2016

  • This webinar focuses on different approaches to creating interfaith encounters between students. We’ll look at different formats for interfaith programming and examine strengths and limitations of each type.

Part 4: Responding to Conflict on Campus. May 17, 2016

  • The final webinar of the series takes a look at how campus professionals have responded to instances of conflict, crisis, and tragedy on campus in relation to religious diversity.

Institute on High-Impact Practices and Student Success
June 21-25, 2016 | Los Angeles, CA

In conjunction with AAC&U’s LEAP Challenge and Centennial Year focus on the connections between high-quality liberal learning, equity, and inclusive excellence, the 2016 Institute on High-Impact Practices and Student Success is designed to help campuses and systems make institution-wide changes that benefit all students.  It is ideal for institutions at various stages of work, and it addresses ambitious goals for improving both completion rates and the quality of student learning.  Participant teams work on removing barriers to student success and devising integrative learning-centered plans—making intentional and evidence-based use of Essential Learning Outcomes and high-impact practices. Teams typically consist of a team leader and four team members. Team leaders are most often senior academic or student affairs officers.

Merrimack College Community Engagement Fellowship
This year-long fellowship covers all tuition costs. Students take courses in the summer and evenings throughout the semesters as they engage in a site-based residency (a partner school, college, or community-based organization), gaining unparalleled hands-on field experience.The program focuses on diversity and social justice, community development, and organizational change. Fellowships are open to all academic majors and backgrounds; bachelor’s degree is required. More information  HERE.

Interfaith Curriculum Development Grants - National
IFYC is happy to announce grants of up to $1,000 to individual faculty to support the development of undergraduate courses that engage the field of interfaith and interreligious studies.

$5,000 Youthlinc Young Humanitarian Award Application Open
The Youthlinc Utah Young Humanitarian Award is a $5,000 college scholarship awarded to an altruistic young person who strives to service others. One runner-up will receive a $3,000 college scholarship. Three runner-ups will receive a $1,000 college scholarship. Five honorable mentions will receive a $500 college scholarship.Deadline for application: Wednesday, March 16, 2016 Apply here

Newman Civic Fellows Nomination Open

The nomination period is now open for Campus Compact's 2016 Newman Civic Fellows Award, which recognizes community-involved student leaders. The Newman Civic Fellows Award honors the late Frank Newman, one of Campus Compact's founders and a tireless advocate for the civic engagement of higher education.  Each Campus Compact Member President is invited to nominate a student here.

Generous U- Celebrating Philanthropy on U.S. Campuses - National
Generous U is a contest that promotes the goal of encouraging social justice philanthropy. Generous U awards a $10,000 price (and a runner-up prize) to college students who propose ways of increasing philanthropy on their campus. Eligible student groups should submit an Intent to Apply and then prepare a proposal and short video, demonstrating how your group increases philanthropy and/or philanthropic values on your campus. Applications are due Friday, March 11, 2016. More information here.

Community-Based Work Study
Community-Based Work Study allows college students to earn work study funds by working through an off-campus non-profit community-based organization. This program gives students the opportunity to be engaged in work that directly benefits their community and is more than a form of financial aid. Summer 2016 Institute on Philanthropy and Voluntary Service
This is an academic internship program for undergraduates passionate about service and interested in a summer experience making a community impact. The program equips students with the practical and ethical tools needed for students to strengthen their leadership and professional skills. The program runs from June 4 - July 29, 2016 in Washington, DC. More information here.

Community Partner Guide to Campus Collaborations: Enhance Your Community By Becoming a Co-Educator With Colleges and Universities: Christine M. Cress, Stephanie T. Stokamer, Joyce P. Kaufman
Based upon years of field experience, this Guide is addressed to you, whether your non-profit has experience of working with university interns or volunteers but wants to deepen and increase the effectiveness of the relationship; whether your agency is starting to explore how to improve client services through a campus collaboration; or whether you work for an NGO interested in partnering with universities across borders to effect positive change and draw attention to the challenges, resources, and needs of your community. This Guide offers insights and strategies to leverage student learning and community empowerment for the benefit of both parties. Engaged Faculty Institute Curriculum
California Campus Compact, Campus Compact of the Mountain West, and Community-Campus Partnerships for Health are very excited to announce the release of the Engaged Faculty Institute (EFI) Curriculum. The EFI Curriculum is a resource for intensive faculty development specific to service-learning course design (or re-design), including units focused on cultural competence, partnership development, sustainability and institutionalization of engagement, in addition to units on course design and assessment.
