June 2016:

Many Hands Make Light Work!

More often than not, June is a quieter
month at Cowichan Green Community's office. Typically, we are in the midst of organizing a few events, our staff are out in the field working on garden and farm projects, and a few of us are taking our annual holidays. However, this June, our office will be anything but quiet as we prepare for 4 new Skills Link interns, 6 summer students, and 4 new Seed Incubator Farm staff (details on this project to come in the July newsletter).

With more people on board, we are just beginning to grasp the amount of work that we will accomplish over the next few months. From setting up a new farm enterprise, supporting our FruitSave volunteers to harvest more fruit, to running our KinPark Kids Summer Camp, we are preparing ourselves for a busy and productive summer.

However, before the busyness commences, we would like to reflect back on the month of May and congratulate the winners of our 2016 Green Superhero Awards. This year's award winners include: Pamela Williams (Individual Category), Leadership and Resiliency Program through Community Options Society (Youth Category), and Shawnigan Residents Association (Group Category). As well, we would like to congratulate the Cowichan Intercultural Society's Board of Directors (see above photo) who were the recipients of our 2016 The Station Board of the Year Award. Thank you to all for the contributions you make to the community.

We wish everyone a safe and happy month ahead.
In gratitude,
CGC Team

Ceres: Water Wise Gardens

The month of May brought some very warm weather to the Valley and already we’re seeing drought conditions and Stage 1 watering restrictions in place since May 1. Producer Profile: Folki Herbs

In May 2009, Sebastien and his wife Catherine started to look for land on which to begin building their dream organic herb farm. A 13-acre parcel located between Mays and Herd Rd. stood out from the pack with unusual hills and a quiet and serene valley location, ideal for building a home and raising their young family. The land, however, was raw and severely depleted of nutrients making it a challenge to cultivate. Read more...

CGC shares events that are submitted to us by our community that we feel may be of interest to our members. However, we do not necessarily endorse or actively support the events and activities posted on this bulletin board.
