March 2016 - A Spring in our Step!

The countdown to spring is officially on and we have lots in store this month to get you and your garden ready for another growing season.

On March 5th, Nora Arajs and David Pink, of Warmland Irrigation, will host a Water Wise Gardening Workshop. Learn from the pros and get your garden ready for dryer growing seasons. Stop by CGC's office to register today!

As well, on Sunday, March 20th, CGC will host Duncan's 8th annual Duncan Seedy Sunday. Our favourite event of the year, join us on the first day of spring for a day dedicated to the exchange and sale of local seeds and plants. This year's event will featuring 35+ local seed and garden vendors, community booths, a seed exchange, and activities for kids.

Seedy Sunday will also feature four gardening workshops hosted by local experts including: Water Wise Gardening with David Pink; Drought & Deer Tolerant Plant workshops with Joan Wynden of Garden Lore; a Plants Create Wondrous Music workshop with Devmurti Khalsa of Nature Spirit Permaculture; and Seed Saving 101 with Joy Story of Grow Food Garden Journals and Edible Garden Designs. Admission is $2. CGC members and children under the age of 13 enter for free. We look forward to seeing you there!

We wish everyone a great March and kick-start to spring.

In gratitude,
CGC
Wondrous World
of Seeds

I’ve been saving seeds since I was 4 or 5 years old, when my earliest memory of collecting seed was in my mother’s garden in the Okanagan Valley. I was mesmerized at how the nasturtium blossoms had left behind these wonderful wrinkly pods. “You can plant those next year,” mum suggested, as my little hands filled my pockets with seeds. "I can put this in the ground and more flowers will grow?"

Seed is the source of life and key to our local food system. Learn to save seed (it’s easy for most things), purchase your seeds from local organic producers, and grow what you can for you and your family in your own garden.  One of my personal seed heroes is Dr. Vandana Shiva of Navdanya in India.  Central to Shiva’s work is the idea of seed freedom, or the rejection of corporate patents on seeds.
