Wondrous World
of Seeds
I’ve been saving seeds since I was 4 or 5 years old, when my earliest memory of collecting seed was in my mother’s garden in the Okanagan Valley. I was mesmerized at how the nasturtium blossoms had left behind these wonderful wrinkly pods. “You can plant those next year,” mum suggested, as my little hands filled my pockets with seeds. "I can put this in the ground and more flowers will grow?"
Seed is the source of life and key to our local food system. Learn to save seed (it’s easy for most things), purchase your seeds from local organic producers, and grow what you can for you and your family in your own garden. One of my personal seed heroes is Dr. Vandana Shiva of Navdanya in India. Central to Shiva’s work is the idea of seed freedom, or the rejection of corporate patents on seeds.
