May 2016

A bounty of farm and food resources

CGC was honoured to kick-off the month of May by participating in the Taste of Spring fundraiser. This event, which raised nearly $4,000.00 for CGC's teaching kitchen, brought together the culinary expertise of five local chefs who prepared an amazing menu of local dishes, paired with local wines and beverages. We are so grateful to Bill Jones, the Cowichan Chefs' Collaborative, the Old Firehouse Wine and Cocktail Bar, Ron Bogdonov, and donors who organized this fundraiser for CGC. It was the perfect way to start a new month!

The rest of May promises to be equally as exciting. Each week we will host a separate event. From Chill Fest, a Youth Dance, supporting Cow-op to host a Farmers' Market Picnic, to our Annual General Meeting, there will be ample ways for our community to connect, enjoy local food, pick-up a copy of the 2016 Buy Local! Buy Fresh! Cowichan Farm Map (hot off the press!), and to learn more about our work in the community.

As we lead up to these events, particularly our Annual General Meeting, we would like to put a call out for volunteers interested in joining CGC's Board of Directors. If you like what CGC has been up to and are interested in getting more involved with the organization, please contact Nadeane Nelson, CGC's Vice-President at n.nelson@telus.net. CGC's dynamic board meets once per month on the 3rd Wednesday evening.

Lastly, CGC would like to share information on an exciting event that some of our community partners are organizing. This July, Cobble Hill will be home to the Vancouver Island Homesteaders Fair. Taking place on the weekend of July 16th and 17th at the Cobble Hill Hall, this event will feature local vendors, workshops, and activities all dedicated to the art of rural and urban homesteading. The event organizers are currently looking for guest presenters interested in sharing their knowledge and skills. If you have a skill that you'd like to share, such as canning, small engine repair, or animal husbandry, please contact
cobblehilleventsociety@gmail.com

In gratitude,
CGC Team

2016 CSA's & CSF's

Each year, CGC is asked to put together a list of Cowichan-based Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs and harvest box initiatives. Accordingly, we have compiled a brief listing of the CSA and box programs that we are aware of. This list of fifteen businesses retails products as diverse as garden and farm produce, seafood, and flowers. Happy eating! Click here to read the full list.
