July 2016: New Projects & Staff

Over the past few months, CGC has received a number of questions regarding our activities on the parcel of land on Beverly Street. Well, we are pleased to officially announce that the Cowichan Incubator Seed Farm (CISF) is underway. A long-term dream of CGC, we are thrilled to be establishing the first of its kind seed production and training farm in Duncan. This project will directly address the challenge farmers and gardeners face in sourcing organic, open-source, open-pollinated, and regionally adapted seed. Through the creation of a community seed bank and the training of new farmers skilled in seed production, the farm will enhance our community’s seed and food security.

This once prime agricultural site – leased generously to CGC by the Municipality of North Cowichan – will soon be transformed into a valuable community space. For more information contact foster@cowichangreencommunity.org or stop by and say hello!

New to our team this month, we would also like to welcome our new staff, interns, and summer students to the CGC family. Joining our Incubator Seed Farm project are Bill, Carly, Jonah, and Paula. Joining our second SkillsLink team are Carter, Laurissa, Craig, and Justine. Lastly, we would like to welcome our amazing team of summer students including Emma, Ainslinn, Katie, Chantal, Alexandra, Hannah, and Faith. We are currently a team of 28 and, as you can probably imagine, our staff meetings have gotten a lot bigger!

Lastly, this month is filled with an assortment of great community events. We'd like to encourage everyone to come out to the Homesteader Fair taking place on the weekend of July 16-17 in Cobble Hill. Check-out their website for event and workshop activities.

We wish you a great month ahead.

In gratitude,
CGC Team

Community Bulletin Board

Diversity is the stronghold of a resilient community. Like-mindedness doesn't always mean we agree with each other about everything. CGC shares events that are submitted to us by our community that we feel may be of interest to our members. However, we do not necessarily endorse or actively support the events and activities posted on this bulletin board.
