SPECIAL GUEST - Ovidiu Marinescu
If you want crazy exuberance, jump-off-your seat cello music, tap-your-foot symphonic music, Miguel del Aguila's Concierto en Tango, which I will perform on December 8 with Newark Symphony Orchestra, is that and more. This is a tango on steroids, to me belonging to the Nuevo Tango style. Incredible orchestration, interspersed with jazz combo like cello, drums, piano, bass and a solo violin, provide a journey into South American urban landscape. When I first heard the concerto, commissioned by Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor Joanne Falletta with Roman Mekinulov, I wanted to play right away. In the meantime a new friendship with the composer and now the adventure of putting it together with Maestro Simeone Tartaglione has provided lots of meaningful music making. The composer was born in Uruguay, and so he brings first hand experience of the national favorite dance (even though most people know the tango only as Argentinian). Miguel del Aguila lives now in the Pacific Northwest. This concerto is getting dozens of performances every year all over the world, but is likely the first performance in the tri-state area.

What keeps you playing with NSO?
Tuesday night is my favorite night of the week. I get to be with all the people I love the most, and play the music I love the most!  When I moved to Delaware from Virginia, I didn't know very many people here.  Playing in the NSO gave me an instant family.  When Wendell joined, it made it even more special for me.

What other activities do you enjoy?
I enjoy being involved in my church, Dover Presbyterian, and going to New York City to watch Broadway shows with my son. David, and his partner, Sean.  I also enjoy watching movies and shows on the couch with Wendell and our cat, Rhet
Wendell Banyay, Principal Trumpet

This Concert: Wedding Bells!

What keeps you playing with NSO?
Michelle likes my trumpet playing as I sit behind clarinet. That’s how we met 25+ years ago.  I enjoy the many wonderful people who play for the love of playing.  It’s refreshing!

What other activities do you enjoy?
Listen to and read about music and musicians.  I’m also a news and coffee junkie.  I’m not particularly outgoing, but I love being with small groups of people for whatever.
