WHAT IS #GIVINGTUESDAY?

We have a day for giving thanks. We have two for getting deals. Now, we have #GivingTuesday, a global day dedicated to giving back. On Tuesday, December 1, 2015, charities, families, businesses, community centers, and students around the world will come together for one common purpose: to celebrate generosity and to give.

It’s a simple idea. Just find a way for your family, your community, your company or your organization to come together to give something more. Then tell everyone you can about how you are giving. Join us and be a part of a global celebration of a new tradition of generosity. If you cannot fund-raise yourself, we hope you will consider donating to the campaign.

I am using this day to remember the loved ones I am grateful for.  I was blessed with two loving parents, unlike the children at Messef.  Giving Tuesday is one day after my Mum's birthday, on the 30th November.  She was born in 1923 and if she were still alive would have been 92 this year, so I am kicking off this appeal by donating her age in dollars -  in loving memory of Herta Haynes aka Billy.  She was one of the most loving and generous people I have ever known and was a Friend of Messef while she was alive.   If you would like to do the same, let us know who you are making your donation for and we will list all the names at the end of the campaign.  If you use PayPal you can add their name under special instructions or let us know by replying to this email and feel free to send us a photo if you wish.  If you are in Canada, the UK or the DR you can help us save on PayPal charges, just contact us and we will explain how.

This is just my way of marking #GivingTuesday, please give however you feel led.

WHAT'S BEEN DONE RECENTLY AND
HOW WILL YOUR GIFT BE USED?
We informed you in our last Newsletter of our growing cooperation with A Serving Heart, who also support an orphanage a little further into Haiti in Cap Haitien.  Julienne Lebrun and Dr. Kerolle have been able to visit Messef several times in recent months and have repaired the broken water pump, provided much needed health care, and provided charcoal for cooking as firewood is desperately scare in Haiti due to massive deforestation. Their ministry is in the process of providing a washing machine, chairs and a stove.

There have been several serious health needs - Nadeline was diagnosed with severe epilepsy, most of the children were found to be suffering with anemia, Fadelin with malnutrition and Gellet became very sick with tuberculosis.  All of these issues are being addressed - we are very grateful for Dr. Kerolle's care of these children and teenagers.

Pastor Quirico has continued to take a food run every month, made possible by your generous donations.  The number of children has fallen, and we have reduced our budget in line with that, so have been able to continue without the need to ask for your help for some time. We have sufficient funds for 2-3 more food runs, but will ask for your help at year's end to take us into 2016.

We want to take this opportunity, when there are less residents, to improve the facilities at Messef so that the leaders can take in more orphans or children in need of care. As we have told you before, the Haitian authorities provide no help for orphanages but do monitor them quite closely.  Donations made in this Appeal will be used to this end.

We wish finally to complete the boys' dormitory, a project that was started in 2013 and has progressed a little further each year through your help.  The floor is still dirt and we wish to cement this and complete it with a smooth finish and color wash, a more economical floor covering than ceramic.  The walls inside also need to be finished and A Serving Heart hope to provide the paint to complete the task once the walls are ready. There is plumbing that needs repairing and many smaller aspects that need to be dealt with to make the property safer and more comfortable for the children.  We carried out some of this work when we first became involved with Messef 8 years ago, but time and wear and tear have taken their toll (materials here are notoriously poor quality). The recession and difficulties in entering Haiti have prevented us from assisting more with improvements and regular maintenance, but the input from A Serving Heart has given us all a renewed hope that things can move forward once more.

We are going to set an ambitious target of US$5,000 to enable us to make rapid headway with these needs so that more children who are desperately in need of a home can be taken in as soon as possible.  A Serving Heart are trying to secure a small salary for staff so that there can be some much needed continuity and loving care for the children. Please help us to meet these goals.
RECENT PHOTOS
Thank you to everyone who has donated money or gifts since our last Newsletter - Shauna, Rhonda, Bernadette, Brenda, and Linda and George's grandchildren who donated their collected candy - that will be going to Haiti at Christmas.  Huge thanks also to A Serving Heart and Dr. Kerolle.

We would once again  like to thank Trudy, Cliff, Wendy, Barbara and Jeanette, our regular sponsors, all in the UK, for their support.  If you would like to join them, with no matter how small a regular donation, please contact us.  If you are interested in child sponsorship for a nominated child, this can be organized at the Living Christ Orphanage, as administered by A Serving Heart - just let us know and we will put you in contact.
