CTA Pitch AgriHack 2018

Kigali, Rwanda

Tuesday 4 September - Saturday 8 September 2018

This e-agriculture start-up competition, with a special emphasis on young women entrepreneurs for the 2018 edition,  will hold its final during AGRF. It welcomes co-founders of e-agri start-ups owners of early stage or advanced ICT platforms that are already operational. The theme this year is "Women entrepreneurs innovate for agricultural transformation in ACP countries". A total of nine prizes will be awarded. 50% of finalists are women-led start-ups.

Emerging Models Disrupting Agribusiness in Africa?

Agriculture is Africa’s largest economic sector, representing 15% of the continent’s total GDP and accounting for more than 20% of its annual economic growth. This session will consider how to develop agribusiness activities, both downstream (processing) and upstream (input provision), and sustainably link smallholders and small enterprises to structured value chains.

Entrepreneurial Youth in Agriculture: New Skills and Technologies for Growth

To effectively harness the emerging opportunities for economic transformation and associated work opportunities for youth, policymakers need to anticipate how these trends will affect African agriculture and proactively formulate and implement pragmatic strategies to respond to them. The session will focus on the salient transformational changes influencing agriculture and employment patterns with particular attention to the youth population, and provide context-specific approaches to respond to them.

Contribution to the Policy Symposium: New Opportunities for Regional Food Markets and Food Trade in Africa

Kickoff of the project "Upscaling CSA for Smallholder Farmers in Ethiopia"

CTA and implementing partners have recently begun a project “Accelerating the Uptake of Climate-Smart Agriculture in Ethiopia” aimed to improve resilience, agricultural productivity, food security and income of 20,000 smallholder farmers in Ethiopia through the promotion of widespread adoption of climate-smart agriculture (CSA) practices. The project will identify proven CSA approaches and use innovative ICT tools to increase farmer adoption of the approaches. The kickoff event will be used to engage high-level government and policy makers in Ethiopia regarding the project, discuss project implementation and deliverables with all the implementing partners and, follow up on the potential of NDC to facilitate the promotion of CSA in the country.

GODAN Action MOOC: Open Data Management in Agriculture, Nutrition and Land

This fourth MOOC in the GODAN Action online learning series focusses on open data management for land, agriculture and nutrition.

The GODAN Action team invites anyone handling data in their studies or work, in the areas of land, agriculture and nutrition, to apply for the course.

GODAN Action is a three year project to enable data users, producers and intermediaries to engage effectively with open data in the agriculture and nutrition sectors. This e-learning course is being developed as part of the capacity development activities of the project, which aims to contribute to increased farmers’ yields, improved nutrition for consumers and better evidence-based policy making. Achieving such impacts requires that individuals, organisations, and communities feel confident in engaging with open data.

Caribbean week of agriculture 2018: Strengthening agriculture for a healthier future in the region

The Government of Barbados hosts the 15th Caribbean week of agriculture (CWA) under the theme: “Caribbean week of agriculture 2018: Strengthening agriculture for a healthier future in the region”. This regional event provides a forum for Ministers of Agriculture, planners, regional organisations and other key agricultural stakeholders in the public and private sectors of the Region, to meet to discuss major issues affecting the agricultural sector in the region.
