Climate-smart agricultural solution receives government backing in Zambia

Discover CTA’s efforts to promote climate-smart agricultural solutions for 60,000 smallholder farmers in Zambia. The government has contracted one of the project partners to develop a weather-based insurance product that could reach 1.5 million farmers at the national scale.

To provide the most robust research to address global warming requires investing in young scientists and providing them with the capacity and skills to lead agricultural climate researchers of the next decades. Dr Wanjiru Kamau-Rutenberg, director of African Women in Agricultural Research and Development (AWARD), outlines the aims of their One Planet Fellowship initiative, and how it will be supporting young researchers under the age of 35.

Bundled green services drive farmer adoption of climate-smart agriculture

Experience with climate-smart agriculture (CSA) initiatives increasingly shows that delivering green services in isolation is an ineffective approach that produces disappointing outcomes. The provision of ‘bundled’ of products which are suited to farmers requirements is far more likely to promote CSA uptake, increasing sustainability and resilience to climate change as a result. Examples from different CTA projects show this approach in action.

Overcoming challenges to deliver agricultural weather-index insurance

This brief identifies and addresses key issues facing weather-index-based agricultural insurance. Drawing on diverse experiences from Africa and Central America, it zooms in on key challenges such as affordability, quality of weather data and models, raising awareness and trust in the benefits of insurance products and policy and regulatory frameworks. Scaling strategies require reliable products, access to the rural areas, increased awareness about insurance and cost-effective delivery channels.
