Work! Experience! Discover!

No. 104 | 13.10.2016

Dear Friends

If you haven't seen it yet, we're pleased to share with you the new Annual Review 2016. We received far more articles than we could possibly use, so we had to make some tough choices on what to include. In the end we feel like we achieved a good balance of relevant, interesting articles. We hope you like it and it's useful for you in your job-raising and promotion this year. Hard copies will be sent out as soon as they have been printed. A big thank you must go to Tim Binnion from IAESTE China for designing it and doing such a great job.

One week today is IAESTE Day! We hope that you're well advanced in your celebration plans and we'd be grateful if you could let us know what you're planning and if you'll be joining us in our 'Imagine' video (see below if you don't know what it is).

The deadline for nominations to the IAESTE A.s.b.l. Board are fast approaching. If you have thoughts or opinions on who you think would bring valuable skills and experience to the team, then please approach them. There are many great people in IAESTE but not all of them would feel comfortable putting themselves forward, but would do so if asked!

IAESTE Day - Imagine

With IAESTE Day just a week away we're attempting to do something ambitious! We're inviting all members to record a video of them singing the John Lennon song, Imagine. We will then edit the videos together to make a global IAESTE singalong version! (As you can see below, we might have borrowed the idea :))

Will it work? Only if you participate! Here are some useful guidelines for how to record your video to make it easier for us to edit. If you need some help with the music and words, here's a karaoke version on youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWJhXl8Tauc Don't forget to send your videos to alumni@iaeste.org as soon as possible after the 20th.

EAIE Report

This year the EAIE (European Association for International Education) Annual Conference in Liverpool brought together more than 5200 participants from over 80 countries and was Europe's largest international higher education conference, packed full of interesting sessions, networking events and knowledge-sharing opportunities. With over 200 exhibition stands showcasing their products and services, this year's Exhibition was the EAIE's largest yet.

The conference theme was 'Imagine...'. As international educators, the participants have a dream of higher education that transcends national borders, nurtures global citizens and moves everybody closer to freedom, equality and peace around the world. So they were bringing this dream to Liverpool.

The main Conference topics concerned mobility, internationalisation in higher education, networks and student experience. The Conference was assisted by impressive Exhibitions from universities, higher education institutions, consortia, language schools, Student Recruitment Agencies.

For sure, the most interesting and forward-looking topic in the Liverpool gathering was related to the Internationalisation at Home (IaH) project. IaH is a concept that refers to a range of activities such as internationalisation of the curriculum, the international classroom and online internationalisation. Essentially, they are activities that enable students to gain international experience without necessarily going abroad

IaH doesn’t aim to prevent or replace outgoing mobility. IaH can be an engine for outgoing mobility, because it can equip students with the international and intercultural skills they need abroad. It may thus whet the student’s appetite for going abroad. This project could be easily implemented also in IAESTE community. So let’s imagine…

If you'd like to discuss this topic further, please do get in touch.

UIA Conference in Korea report

The main purpose of the Union of International Associations (UIA) Round Table was to share experiences and knowledge as well as to build and deepen networks among international associations.

This 5th UIA Round Table was a great opportunity for us to meet representatives of other international associations and introduce IAESTE to those who are not yet aware of us. All the participants agreed with the necessity of work-related experiences for students before they jump into the workforce and those who had not heard about IAESTE validated us as a promising association.

The conference was also was a great opportunity to build networks with government-related participants from the Republic of Korea. For the Annual Conference (AC) which will be held in Incheon, Republic of Korea, we were able to build connections with the participants of UIA Round Table who are involved in the Korea Tourism Organisation and Incheon Tourism Organisation, and we are hoping to receive advice and help for the AC in January.

Staff Changes

Dear friends,

I am writing you this e-mail to inform you of the fact that there has been a change of National Secretary in IAESTE Netherlands. For the last two years, I was in this position, and in this time I went to many events and met inspiring people from all over the world.

The new National Secretary / President of IAESTE Netherlands will be Max Kersten, who was formerly the president of IAESTE Delft, and has shown to be the right person for this job. I am sure he will do a great job in leading our national organisation, just as he did with the Local Committee. You can meet him at the upcoming AC in Korea.

The e-mail president@iaeste.nl has been changed to forward to Max, who can also be reached on his personal email: max.kersten@iaeste.nl. I can still be reached at pim.sauter@iaeste.nl

With kind regards,

Pim Sauter
